When people typically think of comic book shows they more then likely think of action shows like The Flash or Agents Of Shield for example. Yet what alot of them don't know is that here was a comic book show in the late eighties that wasn't based of anything Marvel or DC and infact it wasn't an action show at all it was a horror show and after some time putting of doing a review from one of this shows episodes I thought that now was the right time to sit down and check out an episode of this show and so then join me as I review the episode that proves that Marty Mcfly's mum will still be beautiful in her later years with the episode in question being called simply just "Only Sin Deep" enjoy.
The plot of this episode is when a young beauty dreams of live away from the streets she discovers somethings are more valuable then money and fame. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very episode well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very episode was in all honesty really good. As it's not really a plot that you see played out at all which does in turn make the plot of this episode feel alot more unpredictable as you don't really know where the episode is going to be going with it's plot but at the same time tho this episodes plot isn't really that well developed with it being hard to tell what the main plot of the episode even is alot of the time as the episode doesn't really give it's central plot alot of attention but when it does that's when the episode gets to be alot more interesting as it's only the kind of story that could work in a horror themed comic book show as it's to out there for a normal horror show and to scary for a comic book show but when you combine the two together that's when you get the perfect home for a plot like this one to exist and heck this episodes plot is so good that it could even be argued that the film The Substance borrowed it's plot from this episode as the two of them do share a very similar plot line with the only difference being one of them was made for theaters and therefor could be more scary with it's plot and ideas and one was made for TV and really couldn't do as much as it could have done given it's very limited budget with the plot of this episode also being really rather entertaining and as well as being really rather engaging as well in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
Starring in this episode is Lea Thompson as Sylvia Vane , Britt Leach as The Pawnbroker and Brett Cullen as Ronnie Price. Also starring in this episode is Pamella D'Pella as Raven , G. Smokey Campbell as Smitty , Burke Byrnes as Cop , Matthew Faison as A Doctor , Pamela Gordon as The Old Crone , Pamela West as The Date , Barry Thompson as The Doorman and John Kassir as The voice of The Crypt Keeper.
Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very episode well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very episode was in all honesty really good. With alot of this episodes shockingly turning in some really good performances in this episode which is shocking because of the fact that alot of this episodes actors are a bunch of really unknown actors with really the only big name in this whole entire episode being Lea Thompson and even then she's not that big of a name and as such it would have been foolish to expect good performances from this episodes actors and yet that's exactly what they give us with alot of this episodes actors turning in some really good performances in this episode and while it would have been super easy to say that John Kassir is the best actor in this whole episode as he does appear in all of the episodes plus all but one of the movies from this franchise the episodes best actor quite clearly has to be Lea Thompson as this episodes proves that even when she's not in any of the Back To The Future movies she was and still is a good actor in her own right and one that really could have made it big if she really wanted to with this episode being proof of that as even tho we are so used to seeing her in more comedic roles here she has to play everything straight and may god does she do it well with her performance being a really solid performance in this episode with the acting that's in this episode really being helped by the fact that this episodes script is just so good that al this episodes have to do is just say the lines as they are written and a good performance will come out of them naturally which s something that really does help to raise the overall quality of the acting that's in this very episode.
The key theme to this episode is one that not only still holds up to this very day but also one that kids today could stand to learn as the key theme of this episode is as the title says that beauty if only skin deep. Something which we see all throughout the episode as the character of Sylvia is always looking at herself in the mirror and is always putting on make up to make herself look all the more beautiful then what she already is and when her beauty from her perspective starts to fade she views herself as being ugly and old this is something that due to the invention of social media kids today are going through as there being told time and again by various social media influencers that there not good looking enough unless they have there recent products and merch so much so that kids today are starting to view themselves as being ugly with this episodes key theme being something that they could stand to learn as much like Sylvia herself learns the hard way beauty is only skin deep and while that's a very cliche thing to say it's also true and that's something that is done really well in this episode and it's done well because of the fact that it's subtle thing and it's something that Sylvia herself doesn't learn as she is lost without her beauty as she saw that as her way to top and a way to get rich and famous something which due to advent of reality TV shows alot of people not just kids but people in general are trying to do as that's a very easy way to get famous but unless you have the skills to back it up fame and fortune does sadly alot of the time come at high a cost and while this episodes theme could have been handled a little bit better there's no denying the fact that's a theme that is just a relevant today as it was back when this episode first aired in 1989.
For those of you who are unaware this show is based off the comic book of the same name Bill Gaines and Al Feldstein with the series adapting stories from other EC Comics comic books like The Haunt of Fear, The Vault of Horror, Crime SuspenStories , Shock SuspenStories and Two-Fisted Tales. With this episode in particular being adapted from issue twenty four of The Haunt Of Fear which featured artwork by story artist Jack Kamen while it is hard to say if the book is the better version of the story or if this episode is the better version of the story the fact that a show was more then willing to adapt alot of stories just for one show does say that the makers of this show did care about the stories that they were adapting and while this episode had to get rid of one character from the comic that this story is based on that being The Vault Keeper it's of no lose to the story as he basically fills in the exact same role as The Crypt Keeper does in this show with this show really showing us that there are alot of comic book adaptions out there that do cover alot of different genres of film ranging from light hearted comedies to horror and while this show is a horror show it is a show that as far as I can tell did adapt it's stories mostly faithfully even down to having each episode create a comic book exclusive cover done i the style of how they were done in the original comics and whilst it is hard to say if this episode is faithful to the original story what can be said is that this episode does a good job of making you want to read the original story which in turn might make you want to check out other comic books from EC Comics as well.
If there's a few places where this episode is lacking then surely one of them has to be that you can tell that this has the budget of a TV show. As even tho the show has this all star dream of producers all of whom we're able to get some fairly big names both attached to star in the episodes and direct them the look of the main portion of this episode does look cheap which is of course of no fault of the episode as the people who made this episode could only do the best with what little that they had but it's clear as day that they spent alot more money on The Crypt Keeper puppet and in making sure that that looked good and not the rest of the episode which is fair enough as the puppet is going to be the main start of the show in the first place so it does make sense to make sure that that character looks the best that he could have dine but at the same time tho there still should have been some effort into making the rest of the episode look as good as both the opening and closing scenes of the episode do as the episode goes from looking like something that should be on the big screen to looking like something that feels right at home in a TV show and when you have producers like Richard Donner , Robert Zemeckis and Joel Silver all of whom are known for making these big budgeted movies and having these greats actors in them it feels weird seeing them work on a show where the episodes don't look as good as they could have been and while this could be a budget thing as they would have had to stretch this shows budget out over in this case six episodes it is still something that makes this episode look cheap and while yes granted tho you don't really need that big of a budget in order to tell the story of this episode there still could have been some effort into making the episode look like a feature film and not like that it belongs in an episode of a TV show.
The other thing that does let this episode down a little bit is the fact that Sylvia is revealed to be a pretty horrid person far to early. With this being something that would have helped the episode out quite bit if it was revealed slowly over the course of the episode and yet within the first five minuets of meeting the character we see her shoot and kill a random pimp for his jewelry whereas if we had no idea where she got it from in the first place but then over the cause of the episode saw her go more and more insane as her once famous beauty started to fade it would then be all the more shocking when she does kill her rich boyfriend Ronnie as we would have gotten the chance to like her as a character and yet because of the fact that the makers of this show chose to show her willingly kill someone near the start of the episode and then continue act in brattish type of manor it now means that we the audience aren't all that surprised when she does kill someone that she supposedly loves as it's something that we've seen her do before and while yes her reasons for doing so have indeed changed as before she was doing because she wanted to get something done and now she's doing it out of a need to pay someone back the money that she owes them it still doesn't change the fact that this is something that should have been handled differently as now we the audience aren't all that surprised when she does commit these crimes which yes might be the point of the episode but it's also not a good way to tell a story as you still want your audience to feel sorry for the main character and yet that can't happen because of the fact that we've seen her kill two people.
Now then this episode has / had an exact grand total running time of exactly twenty seven minuets and eighteen seconds. Which to be fair to this episode is pretty much the exact bogstandard running time of this shoe to begin with with the episode even having more then plot there to really cover that amount of running time as well but in saying that this episode also doesn't use it's running time all that wisely either as the plot of the episode really doesn't feel like it' being developed all that well with this mainly due to the fact that outside of the main episode the episode also has to fit in two segments with The Crypt Keeper with one at the start of the episode and the other at the end of the episode but because of that the episodes plot and themes do feel a little weightless as we don't get to see Sylvia struggle for very long with the fact that she's loosing the one thing that she thinks is most important to her which is her looks as that is something that could have been an interesting thing to include in the episodes plot with the episode not even giving it's characters alot of development with Sylvia's friend Raven just straight up disappearing from the episode so when she appears at the end and now doesn't recognize Sylvia due to the events of this episode you straight up forget that the character even existed in the first place and while the character of Sylvia is a fairly well done she does come across as being fairly one note all of the time which fair enough might be the point of the character but it also doesn't make that interesting of a character and Ronnie and The Pawnshop Owner might as well not even be characters as there's nothing to there characters at al with the only interesting thing about The Pawnshop Owner being the fact that he's doing something with the beauty that he takes rom girls and that's really it but I really will admit that this episode really does have some really good pacing to it tho.
So now then as this is a horror episode that really does mean that I have to actually talk about the actual horror that's actually featured / presented to us in this very episode well then in all honesty I i all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual horror that's actually featured / presented to us in this very episode was in all honesty really good. As even tho this episode has nothing all that scary about it and even the episode only has two kills which are at best OK as there just two people getting shot in the chest what makes this episode scary is it's central idea with that being the best piece of horror in the episode as the very idea of someone who is willing to go to these extreme lengths to not only become rich and famous in the first place but then also go to extremer lengths to keep her now fading beauty in the first place is something that does make this episode creepy as while there's nothing about outright scary about that idea it is a creepy enough idea that it does make the episode all the more scary because and heck the idea itself is so scary that it was outright copied in The Substance as both this episode and that film deal with someone who is trying to keep there beauty alive and well the only difference being that that film has alot more gore in it where as this episode has to rely on the idea itself being strong enough and creepy enough to keep us the audience not only invested but also scared and that's something that this episode does really well as the idea really is a creepy idea in it's own that we the audience have no other choice but to be invested as we really want to see just how it all ends for this character which is something that this episode really does get right in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
Overall if you like actor Lea Thompson then this is an episode that's worth watching as she really is good in this episode but at the same time tho this is episode isn't that good of an episode despite it being a great way to get people into watching this show as it's not got alot of horror elements in it and therefor it's more then likely to get more people watching it and that will hopefully get them into horror as well in my freaking opinions anyways / at least. Now then i've talked about all of the good and as well as all of the bad thigs that are in this very episode in this very review and as such that really does mean that this very episode really does earn itself a grand old score of exactly a 6.5 out of 10 from me.
Now then as for where I personally got all o the images that I personally used in this very review well then boys and girls and as well as ladies and gentlemen I personally got all of the images that I personally used in this very review from the official Tales From The Crypt fandom wiki page , Tenor and Google Images. With my personally preferred website to use to get images from this episode being the official Tales From The Crypt fandom wiki page simply because the official Tales From The Crypt fandom wiki page actually has images from this episode really are up and on the official tales From The Crypt fandom wiki page and plus pretty much much all of the images that I personally found on the official Tales From The Crypt fandom wiki page were all really very fairly high quality and as well as being as really very fairly high definition as well and so then horror fans we end this review as we always do with really our one and true goddess Elvira wishing us all some really very unpleasant dreams.
