Sleepy Hollow 1999 Film Review

Director Tim Burton is known for directing weird and strange films but very rarely does he do a full on horror film. Well in 1999 he directed his first straight up horror film and it's that film that I want to talk about today as it's a film that I don't see that many people talking about which is a shame given who is starring in this film and so then join me as I review the film that is bound to make a alot of fandoms very happy with the film in question being called simply just "Sleepy Hollow" enjoy.

The plot of the film is Police Constable Ichabod Crane is sent to the small town of Sleepy Hollow in order to investigate a series of decapitations and must solve this mystery before his own life is taken away from him. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then  in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty not that bad with this films plot being really entertaining and at times very engaging as well in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.

Starring in this film is Johnny Depp as Ichabod Crane , Christina Ricci as Katrina Van Tassel and Miranda Richardson as Lady Mary Van Tassel. Also starring in this film is Sir Michael Gambon as Baltus Van Tassel , Casper Van Dien as Brom Van Brunt , Jeffrey Jones as Reverend Steenwyck , Sir Christopher Lee as The Burgomaster , Richard Griffiths as Magistrate Samuel Philipse , Ian McDiarmid as Dr. Thomas Lancaster , Michael Gough as Notary James Hardenbrook , Marc Pickering as Young Masbath , Steven Waddington as Mr. Killian , Lisa Marie as Lady Crane , Ray Park as The Headless Horseman and Christopher Walken as The Headless Horseman.

Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good. Which really isn't all that surprising as Tim Burton really does know how to get a really good performance out of his cast and when you take into account that this films cast members are a bunch of really good actors and actress then it's not really surprising that this film has a bunch of really good acting in it.

This film is of course based of off the short story "The Legend Of Sleepy Hollow" by author Washington Irving. With the short story itself being published in 1820 what I find truly shocking is the the original story and this film are radically different which seems odd as the original short story would be right up Tim Burton's alley as in the original short story Ichabod as an easily frightened school headmaster and yet in this film he's made into a very competent police constable which just doesn't work as the Ichabod in the original story is an underdog that you want to route for where as here he's not the underdog of his film.

The Sleepy Hollow story is also somewhat of a romance story which is also true for this film adapted as well. With this films romance not really being all that well handled as both Johnny Deep and Christina Ricci despite them both being fantastic actors just don;t have any kind of chemistry with each other not really helping the fact is the fact that this films romance really isn't well written as the two barely share any scenes alone with each other and so their relationship can't be fully developed and yet the film quite clearly wants us to want them to get together without really giving us a reason to really care about them as a couple.

At times this film feels alot less like a gothic horror film and alot more like an action film with the film having several action set pieces. Which doesn't really line up with the tone of the film as the tone of the film makes it like it's going to be a straight up horror film and yet there's an action packed third act and music that would be better suited to being in an action movie which makes me wonder if the producers of this film wanted an action film take on the story and yet Tim Burton wanted something that's a little bit more gothic and so what we got was a compromised version of both visions of this truly iconic short story.

As a mystery film this film does fair a little bit as the mystery behind who is doing these killings and why is genuinely quite engaging. However the film offers next to no clues as to who the culprit is an so when it does get revealed and there motive for these killings is explained it really does come out of nowhere as it wasn't something that was built up in the film which is a shame as this is something that could have been fixed just by adding a few scenes with our heroes finding some clues and questioning the people of Sleepy Hollow and yet they barely do either of those two hings which doesn't make sense for Ichabod's character as he works for the police and is presented as someone who is very forward thinking and yet he really doesn't do the most basic of police work in this film in the slightest way possible.

Now the this film has / had an exact grad total running time of exactly one hour and forty five minuets and eighteen seconds. Which is both a bit to short and at the same time a bit to long for this film to last as it has ore then enough plot to cover a larger running time and yet if it was longer it would make all of the issues that I mentioned seem a lot more larger and alot more noticeable then what it already is and while this film can be quite entertaining in places there are times where the film almost drags to a haul and struggles tom pick up steam again not really helping things is the fact that this film has some pretty average pacing to it at best.

So now then as this is a horror film that means that I have to actually talk the actual kills that are actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I inn all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual kills that are actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty not that bad. Altho seeing the same kind of kill happen over and over again did start to get a bit boring which isn't really a fault of the film as that's more a fault of the short story as well but it is something that is really noticeable and it does help the film to feel a bit more boring as well in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.

Overall while this is a good film in alot of respects and the fact that they somehow managed to get this impressive of a cast is a good thing there are just so many more things wrong with the im then there are right with the film in my freaking opinions anyways / at least. Now then i've talked about all the good and as well as all of the bad things that are in this very film in this very review and as such that really does infact mean that this very film really does earns itself a grand old score of exactly a 7 out of 10 from me.

Now then as for where I personally got all of the images that I personally used in this very review well then boys and girls and as well as ladies and gentlemen I personally got all of the images that I personally used in this very review from the official Sleepy Hollow fandom wiki page , IMP Awards . Com and Google Images. With my personally preferred website to use to get images from this film being the official Sleepy Hollow fandom wiki page simply because the official Sleepy Hollow fandom wiki page actually has images from this film up on the official Sleepy Hollow fandom wiki page and plus pretty much much all of the images that I personally found on the official Sleepy Hollow fandom wiki page were all really very fairly high quality and as well as being as really very fairly high definition as well and so then horror fans we end this review as we always do with really our one and true goddess Elvira wishing us all some really very unpleasant dreams.
