There are so few films these days that capture people's attention just from how there being marketed as alot of the time films will just release a trailer or two maybe a few spots and a few posters and that's it. Yet that is not the case with the film the film i'm going to be reviewing for you all today and it's due to that unique marketing approach that alot of people were hyped to see the film and so then join me as I give you my SPOILER FILLED review of the film of the film that is basically Barney The Dinosaur meets Thomas The Tank Engine meets Mr. Crocket with the film in question being called simply just "Buddy" enjoy.
The plot of this film is when a nineties kids TV character starts actively killing of characters in his own show the kids have to try and find a way to stop and in the real world a mum is looking for her daughter. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good. To say that this films plot is really good would be a huge understatement as there is alot of fun to be found in the main plot of the film as you do get to see all of the tropes that were found in alot of kids TV shows in the nineties only now we get to see a more horrific twist on them which is alot of fun to see in the film. Where the films plot does start to be a bit boring is when we enter the real world with the plot with the mum trying to find her daughter as that plot whilst it is good just feels like the plot to a completely different movie as it plays everything super straight and while the plot in the TV show also does that in there it's dine to highlight just how stupid alot of it really is thus making it more fun to watch yet in the real world due to the fact that we are in the real world play everything super straight can't be done in a fun way with both plots being as well thought out as you'd want them to be as while they do tie together in a rather predictable way it is still fun just seeing how these plots do come together and how the film does explain why a character is suddenly recast in the world of the show with the plot of this film also being really rather entertaining and as well as being really rather engaging as well in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
Starring in this film is Delaney Quinn as Freddy , Cristin Milioti as Grace , Tristan Broders as Oliver and Madison Skyy Polan as Hannah. Also starring in this film is Caleb Williams as Wade , Luke Speakman as Josh , Tory Jacqui Malone as Tyler , Topher Grace as Ben , Brooke Bloom as Dr. Deborah Burr , Clint Howard as George , Seamus Flynn as Timothy , Bryson JonSteele as Derek , Phuong Kubacki as Nurse Nancy , Bennie Taylor as Mailman Miles , Conner Stumm as Mailman Justin , Patton Oswalt as the voice of Strappy , Michael Shannon as the voice of Willie , Jimmica Collins as the voice of Betty Bunny and A Scared Flower , Devon Hawkes Ludlow as the voice of Charlie , Rachel Appelbaum as the voice of Clocky , Eric Bauza as the voice of Mr. Mailbox , Worry Well , Couchy , Trashy and The Pee Flower and Keegan-Michael Key as the voice of Buddy The Unicorn.
Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good. The fact that this films acting is as good as it is is something that is both surprising and not all that that surprising its surprising in that alot of this films lead actors are kid actors and you don't usually get good acting from child actors and yet given just how stacked the rest of the films actors are the fact that we also have good acting in it is also not that surprising with all of the films more established actors also turning in some really good performances. With the best actor in this film being Delaney Quinn as Freddy as she really does carry the whole film along with Keegan-Michael Key and Cristin Milioti as while both of them are really good in this film Delaney Quinn is just that little bit more better with her being one of the better kid actors in this film as it does come across as her genuinely trying to turn in a good performance so much so that its not hard to picture her making it big as an actor as sh is just that good with her more then holding her own when it comes to acting with the films more established actors with there being times where she does act circles around them with her having this natural charm that really does come through in her performance. With the acting thats in this film really being helped by the fact that this films script is just so good that all this films actors have to do is just say te lines as they are they are written and a good performance will come out of them naturally which is something that really does help to raise the overall quality f the acting that's in this very film.
Much like the films acting and its plot this films characters while there not the best characters out there are still really good in there own right. With alot of the films characters being actually well written as while the it could be argued that the kid characters aren't the best written characters out given the fact that they meant to be the typical kids characters that you find in a show like Barney & Friends you could also make the argument that that's the point with them only becoming better later on when the film is in its second act with the even the adults characters of the show being the kind of adult characters that you find in a kids show as they have very standard jobs and are literally named after there job. Even Buddy himself is a very character as while he is quite literally a Barney knock off character he does have an edge to him that does make him alot of fun to watch where the characters do somewhat start to fall apart is the characters in the real world as while Grace is a good character as she is mother who is the only one that remembers having a third kid when the rest of the world even her husband doesn't remember it her husband tho is basically a none character as there is nothing to his character that makes him standout and it could be argued that the same thing is also true for Strappy the talking backpack but with Strappy you do have the excuse of him being a kids character which again could be seen as being the point of his character with it being something that does prove that the makers of this film did do there research as the characters in the show do feel like the kinds of characters that you would seen in a show like this.
SPOILERS START HERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This film is basically riffing on alot of kids shows from the nineties like Barney & Friends , Pee-Wee's Playhouse and Thomas The Tank Engine & Friends. With even the character of Buddy being summoned the same way that the kids would summon Barney with both characters are first being a stuffed animal before then being brought to life in the case of Barney through the kids imagination which in of it self is pretty messed up when you think about it or in the case of Buddy just saying his name with the film poking fun at alot of the tropes that were commonly seen in those shows like the fact that everything is solved with a cheesy musical number or the fact that even tho the show takes place in this one city the main location is just this one set which the characters never leave this is so smart as it does show you that the makers of this film did do there research. As they do go to extreme lengths into making the Buddy parts of the film feel like an actual show that that would have been broadcast in the nineties and while OK fair enough it doesn't go into as many trope as Too Many Cooks did the fact that even tried to hit as many as they do is still something that's to be applauded with the film even explaining why there's suddenly a new character there that wasn't there the previous week which in this case is due to them being killed of by Buddy with the film even going as far as to have them be featured in the shows intro which again is a nice little touch that wasn't needed to make that point work and yet it oddly makes it work all the more. With the only thing that would have made it work even harder was if one of the Buddy episodes was "a very special episode" episode as then it would have allowed the makers of this film to really go all out and just have fun with that format as don't forget even kids shows did have those kinds of episodes and seeing what Buddy would have come up with in his own twisted way is something that is kind if interesting.
There s no way to talk about this film without talking about just how fantastic and how unique that the films marketing really was. As not only did we have the standard trailers and poster but there was also an official It's Buddy Youtube channel launched that uploaded clips from the show as well as what the trailers for the show would have been and various advertisements just for the show that is just pure genius with them even uploading a video of Buddy reacting to his own then recently released TV spot all of these are things that no other movie has done before and while fair enough the Marvel movies or the DC movies can't do something like that but something like Coyote Vs Acme or even Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma heck with that film they even could have uploaded the trailer for Camp Miasma bottom line being there are alot of cool ways to promote a movie and this film did find another cool way with there even being a bunch of horror Youtubers just reacting to the clips from the show all of this does generate hype that the latest big budget movies wont do as they can afford to spend all of there marketing on trailer and posters but here due to the fact that the films marketing budget was really small that meant that they had to get creative and because of that they ended up creating alot of hype for a film that no one would have payed any attention to where it not for how good the marketing was in this film with this film even resulting in the film earning over $5 million dollars at the box office which isn't alot of money for a big budget film but given the fact that this film is an independent film that is a great amount for it earn even taking into account that it came out the exact same day as Coyote Vs Acme.
Like with Too Many Cooks this film does have a dark sense of humor to it and while not alot of the films jokes work when they do work they can be really funny. Like the fact that the main park set does look like something that would be seen in a nineties kids TV show with it even being filmed like one and yet when the characters do escape that set that's when it becomes alot more cinematic which is something that doe hit that joke all of the more and while there are some good jokes to be found there are others that don't quite work like for example the fact that the main city is nothing more then cardboard prop which is something that would have been funny if we saw it prior to the kids escaping the set as then it is something tat would make that joke all the more funnier as us the audience would have seen this location in the background. This does seem to be a film where it does have more good jokes then bad as even the fact that Buddy himself admits that he can't sing a the song that usually ends his show to heal himself up for the next episode is a good idea and it is something that the film does pay off in it's own sick and twisted with there being more jokes in here that you would find funny if you did watch these kinds of shows in the nineties as this is a film that is very much aimed at you with even the fact that the lessons that the kids learn in he show are these very generic lessons or even the fact that none of the kids seem to have parents these are all things that are in this film and they help make the film even more funnier as they are all things that were in alot of shows in the nineties and eighties with the film really working because of the fact that it embraces those shows.
Now then this film has / had an exact grand total running time of exactly one hour and thirty minuets and thirty two seconds. Which is pretty much the perfect running time for a film like this one to have as it really doesn't need to be any longer due to the fact that the films plot as good as it is doesn't really allow for the film to have a longer time which is great as while it does mean that this film isn't on or that long it doesn't to be a long film in order for it to be good as the makers of this film have put the plot first first and while it would have been nice if this film was longer it would mean adding in a bunch of filler scenes that add nothing to the films plot and are just there to pad out the films running with the film having more then enough plot there to really cover that amount of running time in the first place. With the film even using its tunning time really wisely as the films plot is about as well developed as it was going to be as this is the kind of plot where it doesn't really need that much development in order for it work as out side of the fact that the film explains that the world of the Buddy show takes place in it's world and we do see how Budd brings people into it and how they escape from it what we never find is why its it's own world and we don't need to with the same thing being true for alot of the plot elements in this film and yet the plot still works despite them not being that well developed in the first place. The same thing is also true for the films characters as while it would have been nice for Grace to get some characters and development and it could be argued that Freddy does get some character development due to the fact that she is the only one who remembers there mom in the real world next to none of this films actors gets character development and again they really don't need it as alot of them are meant to be characters in a kids TV show but I really will admit that this film really does have some really good pacing to it tho.
So now then as this is horror film that really does mean that I have to actually talk abut the actual kills that are actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual kills that are actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good. As while we don't get to see alot of the kills in involving the kids this is something that does make sense as they using kid actors after all but the few times that we do get to see a kid character get killed of it is really brutal to watch as we see Buddy brutally murder on of the kid characters from behind a door at point and it something that does indeed work with all of the films kills being these really brutal and over the top kills to the point where the kills themselves become more comical then scary. With the best kill in the whole entire film not even being one that we see as when the kids are escaping the shows main set they jump over the fence using the trashcans to help them only for one of the kids to struggle which give Buddy enough time to catch up with them and charge at them using his horn to pierce the kid through the chest something which we don't get to see but it is a kill that still works as it shows you just how far that Buddy is willing to go to keep things his way with that kill being something that whilst yes it would have been better if we did get to see on screen but the fact that we don't does make it all the more creepier and scarier as now we have to imagine it and because of that kill that Buddy is unable to finish his song as all of the kids have escaped with the rest of the films kills being just as good as well in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
SPOILERS END HERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Overall this film is one that does need to be seen as none of the films marketing does t alot of justice and while the stuff in the real world isn't that good the stuff in the shows world is where the film shines best as the film does shows that shows like Barney and like Thomas really were decent shows they could also be really scary in my freaking opinions anyways /at least. Now then i've talked about all of the good and as swell as all of the bad things that re in this very film in this very review and a such that really does mean that this very film really does earn itself a grand old score of exactly an 8.5 out of 10 from me.
Now then as for where I personally got all of the images that I personally used in this very review well then boys and girls and as well as ladies and gentlemen I personally got all of the images that I personally used in this very review from Tenor , Amazon . Co . Uk , IMP Awards . Com and Google Images. With my personally preferred website to use to get images from this film being Google Images simply because Google Images actually has images from this film really are up and on Google Images and plus pretty much much all of the images that I personally found on Google Images were all really very fairly high quality and as well as being as really very fairly high definition as well and so then horror fans we end this review as we always do with really our one and true goddess Elvira wishing us all some really very unpleasant dreams.
