When alot of people think of horror movies that usually think of the big films that all of the major studios are putting out. However there are a whole range of smaller horror films out there alot of which do star very well known horror actors in them such is the case with the film that i'm going to be talking to you all about today with this film having very much 1978 Halloween vibes mixed in with maybe Scream at a stretch and so then join me as I review the film that will put you off going to the nurse with the film in question being called simply just "The Slasher Nurse" enjoy.
The plot of this film is twenty years after a prank goes wrong some friends get together at a holiday home and have to survive when someone from there past starts killing them all of one by one. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty not hat bad. With the films basic premise being something that does work however there in lies the problem as it's a premise that we've seen done to death in countless slasher films like Terror Train and Prom Night all of which featured a killer that getting revenge on a group of kids for a prank gone wrong. The films plot whilst it is a pretty good plot in it's own right is also one that is rather on the thin side of things as the film does pick up and drop its plot alot of the time and it does get to the point where we are left to wonder what the main plot of the film of the film is even supposed to be and give the fact that this film does have a long running time that is not something that we should be wondering as while the premise of the film is one that has worked in the past and does work again here the makers of this film don't put in the effort to make that premise work as the plot of a film rather they are just relying on us the audience to know what happens next as there is not alot of love put into this films plot with it feeling like the plot of the film is secondary to everything else in the film with the plot of this film not really being really rather entertaining and as well as not really being really rather engaging as well in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
Starring in this film is Regina Groth as Grace , Chanda Rawlings as Macey , Gretchen Settle as Brooke and Joshua Kirpach as Evan. Also starring in this film is Diana Prince as Nurse Jaime , Brian Bremer as Mark Sidowra , Arianna Harris as Young Brooke , Beverly Randolph as Dr. Alexandria Costanza , Sawyer Williams as Young Evan , Austin Greene as Bobby , Jim Krut as Fred , Christopher Korek as the voice of the Radio DJ , Steven Kiseleski as the voice of a Bar Patron , Caroline Emily Johnson as Young Grace , Amber Fulcher as The Nurse , Valarie Stylc as the voice of the Woman on Intercom , Brucellious Morris Jr. as Conner , DeRome A. Chretien as Detective Reines , Brendan Lynch as Landon , Bryan M. Dorn as the voice of a Cop , Jeff Kotowicz as Dr. Kotowicz , Michael McGlynn as Detective Ledbetter , Sean Cameron Dalton as Aiden , Molly Murphy as Piper and Felissa Rose as Christina and Valarie.
Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty not hat bad. This films acting is about as good as you'd think that it was going to be given the fact that it does star of bunch of unknown actors and is a very low budget horror film with the only named actor in the film being Felissa Rose and that's it but in all fairness tho this films actors that bad its just that there not that good either with there performances being bland and forgettable with this mainly due to the fact that this films writer and director David Kerr clearly has no idea of how to direct his actors with it being something that does show through in the film itself. With the films best actor also bein it's most well known actor Felissa Rose as she has a duel role in this film as the cat loving Christina and the mysterious Valarie and yet she plays them both really well with her being the only actor where it feels like she is in this movie for the love of horror movies and not just so they can collect a paycheck which is something that it does feel like alot of the time not to be to harsh on the rest of the films actors as there issues stem from a lack of direction but they did still need to put in some effort which is something that Felissa does do with her having her own charm and charisma that really do shine through in the final film. With the acting that's in this film not really being helped by the fact that this films script is just so bad as it gives none of this films absolutely anything to work with interms of what it is that there actual characters personalities are even meant to be in the first place which is something that really does help to harm the overall quality of the acting thats in the first film.
Much like alot of these really low budget horror films the characters in this film really aren't all that good. With alot of them quite frankly being dull and boring characters and the ones that aren't dull and boring have nothing interesting about them that makes you want to know more about them as characters with all of this films characters being the kind of character that you'd expect to see on the first draft of a script and not the characters that you won't to see in the final cut of a film as all they are are stereotypes and that's it and there not not even good stereotypes there just nothing with us having the dumb jock , and the smart one and the rest of them are all the dumb one with Grace being the kind one these characters are just s badly handles as the makers of this film don't really do anything with them that explores who they are as characters. Granted this film didn't have a large budget and therefor wouldn't have been able to afford to do either a rewrite of the films script to fix the characters to film extra scenes that expand on the characters and make them feel more fleshed out but all this does is hit home the fact that the makers of this film don't have any clue on how to create any memorable characters as there's nothing about them that stands out and that makes them memorable alot of the horror films that have the main villain be a kids TV character whilst those films are indeed really bad no one is ever going to deny that but alot of them at the very least make an attempt to have well done characters whereas here it did feel like the makers of this film didn't care enough about the characters to make them interesting when this is something that they really needed to do to make the film work more better then what it already does.
There are parts of this film very early on that gave of vibes to both the original Prom Night and Halloween but for different reasons. With the whole killer being someone that is seeking revenge for a death in the past is something that was the plot of the original Prom Night and while that idea is done well enough in this film it was done better in that film and with Halloween there are shots in this film where the character is either called Piper or The Nurse appear in the background and no creepy music plays to make that moment feel forced and this is something that was done in the original Halloween and while again it is something that is done well enough in this film it was done better in that film as that film was made by a master of the horror genre. While it was nice to see the film tip its hat to those films in those kind of ways things did get a little bit to much when it almost getting to the same level of meta as the first Scream film only without the charm as the opening of the film ha Young Piper and Young Grace exploring a creepy old house that they plan on using for filming a horror movie that they want to make where they discuss where to put a scare in the scene which was something that wasn't needed as it felt like that the makers of this film were just trying to copy what the first Scream did only it wasn't being clever with what it was satirizing whereas if the film just stuck to giving us vibes from the first Halloween and Prom Night whilst it wouldn't have made the film any better it would have made it appear as if the makers of this film knew that they were never going to top what was done in that first Scream movie.
For some odd reason the makers of this film thought that we really needed to have a detective subplot in this film. As while the main plot of the film is going on we then cut back to two detectives trying to find the escaped Piper who is doing all of these killing and it's something that just isn't needed as it just feels like the characters in that subplot where only there to add bodies to the kills and that's it as the detective side of the story for a large portion of the films running time adds nothing to the main plot of the film until that is the final ten or fifteen minuets of the film where the film does some Olympic level gymnastics by having one of them explain that Grace is actually working with Piper with the call that the detective make to get the information being something that was never shown to us on screen. Just to be clear here we got alot of scene prior to the killer even showing up at where the friends are staying none of which service the film at all outside of them telling us that Piper was never as sweet and innocent as she made herself out to be and that's it and yet the actual crucial part of that storyline is something that the makers of this film didn't show us this is something that does make it feel like that they had no idea on how to end that storyline as just as soon as they make that big reveal both Grace and the cop that told Macey that news get killed of and it's never mentioned for those final few minuets not even in passing therefor it had to be something that wasn't in the original script and heck it's not even something that's built up at all as we don't see Grace acting differently when the killer Piper is around and nor do we see her go off somewhere of screen when a character is killed and yet this whole thing was meant to be there plan for them to get revenge on those that harmed and nearly killed Piper at the start of the film.
To be frank the best parts of the film outside of the films admittedly gory kills where the scenes with Felissa Rose. With her scenes even hinting that she'd be appearing in a sequel film due ti the fact she is playing to different characters and yet after checking the IMDB page for the sequel called "The Slasher Nurse: Farm House" which is a twenty minuet short film she's not in that film however there is still a chance that she could appear in future film as from what i've gathered just by reading the IMDB pages for the other films they do seem stick pretty close to continuity altho it does appear as if this one is set in a different fictional world to the other films tho but either way it really would still be nice to see her in more of these films as she is really good in this film and does act rings around the rest of this films actors. Given that the makers of these films do seem to be horror fans as the original film did have some horror references in it it is something that would make sense they did bring her back as she is a horror icon but at the same time tho given the fact that she does have several films all in various stages of being made it would be hard to get to commit to doing another full film this is despite the fact that the idea of her playing two vastly different characters is a good idea as there is a good chance that one of both of her characters are hiding something dark in them which would be really fun to explore in a future film and is something that if it's done right could work well within the world of this film as you really could have it be so that either Christina and Valarie or perhaps even both of them where some of the original nurses that Piper had looking after her at the hospital and that's really it as the rest would write itself.
Now then this film has / had an exact grand total running time of exactly one hour and forty four minuets and forty two seconds. No matter which way you look at it this is a really long time for a horror film like this one to be as there is no reason for the film to be this film as you very easily could have gotten this film down to one hour and thirty minuets just by cutting alot of the pointless police stuff and by trimming down the films opening scene as alot of that happens in the films opening scene isn't needed and if you strip that down to what is needed then you do save alot of time with the same thing being true for the police scenes as well with this film having more then enough plot there to really cover that amount of running time in the first place. Yet even with this film being as long as it is it still doesn't use its running time all tat wisely due to the fact that the film doesn't take the time that it clearly has to fully develop its plot as the film doesn't seem all that interested in giving us a good plot with good ideas rather it seems to be more interested in the relationship drama between some of the friends and all that does is eat up screen time that could have been better spent developing the films plot with the makers of this film putting more though and effort into the films police scenes then in giving the films plot plot development. Heck this is something thats also true for the films character development as none of the films character et any kind of character development but given that the films characters have no actual character to speak this is something that was to be expected and yet it really didn't have to be that way as if the makers of this film did put some amount of thought into the films characters then they really could have been some really good characters and yet the makers of this film where more bothered about giving us a lame and unfunny post credits scene then they were in giving the films characters some actual character development but I really will admit that this film really does have some really good pacing to it tho.
So now then as this is a slasher that really dos mean that I have to actually talk about the actual kills that are actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual kills that are actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good. The films kills to be frank here are the best aspect of the film as that's where you get to see where all of the films budget went and while yews some of the films kills are let down by the badly down sound effects when they all come together in the right way that 's when we get to see good stuff with the film for the most part having some really good gore effect something which was unexpected given the films tiny budget. With best kill in the whole entire film being the death of Evan s first we get to see The Nurse / Piper knock him out and then when he wakes up he's tied to bed by duct tape where The Nurse first rips of his jaw to stop him from talking and then does the same thing to several over parts of his body before then sawing him in half which was a really impressive thing to see as this film didn't have a big budget and therefor it would have been understandable if the makers of this film didn't have alot of gore in the film as they wouldn't have been able to afford and yet here in this one scene we get to see some really impressive looking gore effects which fair enough won't look as good as the gore effects in a big budget horror movie but for a film that was made for less then twenty thousand American dollars the gore in that scene and the kill itself was really impressive with the rest of the films kills being just as good as well in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
Overall whilst this film isn't all that bad its hard to say that its good either as while the film does get alot of thigs wrong it does also get some things right with the only thing that it needed to be a good film was the right creative team behind it and that's it as the film had it all there to be a really good film in my freaking opinions anyways / at least. Now then i've talked about all of the good and as well as all of the bad things that are in this very film in this very review and as such that really does mean that this very film really does earn itself a grand old score of exactly a 5 out of 10 from me.
Now then as for where I personally got all of the images that I personally used in this very review well then boys and girls and as well as ladies and gentlemen I personally got all of the images that I personally used in this very review from tenor , IMP Swards . Com and Google Images. With my personally preferred website to use to get images from this film being Google Images simply because Google Images actually has images from this film really are up and on Google Images and plus pretty much much all of the images that I personally found on Google Images were all really very fairly high quality and as well as being as really very fairly high definition as well and so then horror fans we end this review as we always do with really our one and true goddess Elvira wishing us all some really very unpleasant dreams.
