There are alot of horror films released every single year and as such it would be physically impossible for people to know and watch every single one of them. With films much like the one that i'm going to be talking to you all about today going unnoticed and while sometimes that does really mean that we have a sleeper hit of a film in this case it really doesn't and so then join me as I review the film that puts a new spin on he slasher genre with the film in question being called simply just "Bloody Axe Wound" enjoy.
The plot of this film is the daughter a famous serial killer wants to follow in her fathers footsteps and will do anything to prove that she's a good killer. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was inn all honesty not that bad however tho at the exact same time this films plot wasn't all that good as the film does nothing interesting with it's unique set up which has the add on effect of making this set up seem wasted when if anything this kind of a set up where the horror movies seen in this small town actually happened is a good set up all the film needed was a decent enough script to pull off it's plot and yet the film instead feels like something that would have been made in 2020 as that's just how tired and played out the plot of this film feels like half of the time but credit where it is due the plot of this film is a very unique plot which does go to show you that creativity in the world of horror isn't dead you just have to go looking in smaller places to find it and while a bad plot will always be a bad plot you always have to give a film points for telling a story that's as unique as the plot of this film is with the plot of this film also being really rather entertaining and as well as being really rather engaging as well in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
Starring in this film is Sari Arambulo as Abbie Bladecut , Molly Brown as Sam Crane and Billy Burke as Roger Bladecut. Also starring in this film is one of this films producers Jeffrey Dean Morgan as Butch Slater , Eddie Leavy as Glenn , Sage Spielman as Laverne , Margot Anderson-Song as Patty , Matt Hopkins as Mackenzie , David Littleton as Mark , Keaton Morris-Stan as Drunk Lady , Jahdey Wright as Bryant , Rena Burkhart as Hip Girl and Lizzy Cenicola as Daisy.
Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us inn this very film was in all honesty really good. With this films acting being one of the things that the film actually got a lot of praise when it was released back in December of last year and it's not heard to see why that was the case as the actors that are starring in this film really do turn in some really good performances all throughout this film and while yes it would be super easy to say that Jeffrey Dean Morgan turns in the best performance as Butch Slater that honor instead goes to leading actor Sari Arambulo as Abbie Bladecut who really does have to carry the overall vast majority of this film and she does so with such ease that it's easy tot picture her playing roles outside of the world of horror as she's just that good that she could very easily make it big as a big time hollywood star and heck all of this films young actors really do hold there own and turn in some really good performances in there own right as well with the same thing also being true for Billy Burke with the acting that's in this very film also being helped by the fact that this films script is just so good that all this films actors have to do is just say the lines as they are written and a good performance really will come out of them naturally which is something that really does help to raise the overall quality of the acting that's in this very film.
What really should have been the main focus of this film given it's set up is the bond between Abbie and her dad. Yet the film very quickly drops that idea for no reason when it's that very idea that really should have been the core of the film as it's her dad that Abbie is trying to impress and yet because of the fact that the film drops that aspect of the film in favor for a bunch of stock teen slasher characters it then means that the film looses it's emotional core and the chance to be different from all of the other slashers that are out there and instead becomes just another slasher film only with a slightly unique twist of the format and that's really it and that's not enough to make people want to watch this film and yet if the makers of this film instead chose to focus on the relationship between Abbie and her dad and heck they even could have had them team up for a couple of kills in a fun and funny montage the film just feels like it's lacking that extra special something and when the whole film is built around the fact that Abbie wants to impress her dad so that he will let her take over the family business and become a serial killer in her own right then it means that the films plot losses all kinds of focus when the film decides to drop that aspect of the film and instead focus on the bond between Abbie and the teen characters that she's meant to be killing off which to put in bluntly just isn't that interesting to watch in the film at all.
Again to put it bluntly this films characters just aren't that good as the teen characters are just the stock teen characters from any slasher film only less interesting because of that fact. With the only two interesting characters being both Abbie and her dad and that's mainly because of the fact that one of them is a serial killer and the other one wants to be a serial killer and that's really it as none of this films characters do or say anything that effects who they are as characters as there all just busy being the stock characters from any given slasher film which would actually be funny if the film was using there stock characters traits to comment on the fact that there stock characters but it doesn't as it instead plays it all weirdly straight which makes the characters come off worse as now it makes it look like that the writers of this film were just being lazy ad couldn't be bothered to create interesting characters that we want to see more off and that we want to see make it until the end of the film and yet because of the fact that none of this films characters are interesting characters they all come off as being one dimensional characters with the same thing also being true for Abbie and her dad who despite being the most interesting characters still come of as being one dimensional as while Abbie and her dad have at least some personality none of the others do and none of the others have much in the way of hobbies or interests either with them all just being dull and boring characters that would have fitted in right at home in The Mouse Trap as this films characters are just that dull and boring.
Rant about the characters aside the closest film that I could possibly compare this film to is The Final Girls. As both films blend the slasher genre with comedy however where as with The Final Girls it was done in a tongue in cheek way that actually made fun of the slasher genre as a whole here the film does nothing with the comedy except tell the exact kind of jokes that you think that it would tell and because of that alot of the films jokes just don't work and while the film got alot of hate for it's slapstick tone it's the films slapstick that oddly works for the film as well as at least then you can tell that there was an attempt at being funny but where as when the film actually tells a joke it just falls flat on it's face with the great Jeffrey Dean Morgan telling it the joke still falls flat with this being an example f the fact that this films writer , producer and director Matthew John Lawrence really doesn't know how to tell a good joke as this is film that could have been used to comment on the slasher genre as a whole whilst still being a fun filled slasher film but because of the fact that it plays everything straight lines that could have been funny like the fact that someone gets accused of being the killer despite the fact that they were in the same room as the killer just fall flat were as with The Final Girls they at least had the courage to go all in on the fact that it's slasher comedy and because of that we got a fun filled film that despite having a few rough around the edges jokes was still a pretty funny and a pretty decent film in it's own right.
While this film can be dreadful alot of the time one of the things that it gets right is the relationship between the characters. As pretty much all of the characters relationships are developed enough to the point where you do buy them as friends and in the cases of the two characters lovers as well the issue is tho is that apart from the lovers relationship the film does nothing with these relationships once the kills start happening which makes those relationships feel pointless which does in a way make sense as they were only done so that Abbie could close enough to her victims so that she could kill them all off but even tho if your going to have a new group of characters meet each other for the first time then at the very least show us what happens to there relationships when they all start getting killed off as that would make all of the pointless amount of time that the film spends on there relationships worth it but as things stand since the film does nothing with there relation it instead feels like that there were just to give the killer some victims which would be fine if you were just doing a bogstandard slasher film or even a send up of eighties slasher films but this film promoted itself as being a film that's pretty much meant to be send up of those films and yet it doesn't do any of that and so the film comes across as being a slasher film with bad jokes in it and there for the characters relationships should have played into the film once the kills started happening and not just be forgotten about all together which makes Matthew John Lawrence seem like a really lazy writer.
Now then this film has / had an exact grand total running time of exactly one hour and twenty three minuets and eighteen seconds. Which is pretty much the exact bogstandard running time for a film like this one to ave and to this films credit it really does have more then enough there to really cover that amount of running time but at the same time tho this film really doesn't take as full advantage of it's running time as it really could have done as it doesn't develop any of it's characters as Abbie looses her dream of becoming a serial killer out of nowhere and that's a key aspect of the film and was THE main selling point of the film and yet it's treated as an after thought and none of this films characters are given much in the way of character development either with all of this films characters minus Abbie and her dad being nothing but bland characters and all of these things are things that really should have been fixed at the scripting stage as it's basic film making 101 and yet the makers of this film instead chose to ignore doing basic level stuff for no reason which can and does make this film feel like it's very frustrating to watch as there is a good film in there just waiting to get out as all it needed was a push in the right direction and that's it and that's a shame because the films idea is more then enough to carry the film and make the film good but it still needed a good film making team to make it a great film and that's sadly not what we get with this film in it's current state but I really will admit that this film really does have some really good pacing to it tho.
So now then as this is a slasher film that really does mean that I have to actually talk about the actual kills that are actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual kills that are actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty not that bad. However tho just like the plot of the film this films kills aren't that good not that there bad kills by any stretch of the imagination it's just that there bland a generic kills with this not really being helped that it takes a good long which before any of the main characters start getting killed of with alot of the films running time being spent on two the characters meeting and becoming lovers and that's not what you want to see in a slasher movie and while yes we do get a few good kills at the start of the film it's a good while before we even get another kill in the movie and for a film that's one hour and twenty three minuets long you really can't afford to be leaving pretty much all of your main character kills until the third act of the film as the audience expects the kills to happen all throughout the film and not during the third act and especially not after you've forced us the audience to spend alot of time with characters that we don't even like because the film doesn't give us a reason to like these characters but when the film does have a good kill it can be a pretty decent kill it's just a shame that we have sit through alot of really bad kills just to get to one or two decent kills in this film in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
Overall it's very easy to see why alot of people in the horror community aren't talking about this film as it really is a very frustrating film to watch this is despite it having a few bright spots but even those bright spots aren't enough to save this disaster of film as it's just that bad in my freaking opinions anyways / at least. Now then i've talked about all of the good and as well as all of the bad things that are in this very film in this very review and as such that really does mean that this very really does earn itself a grand old score of exactly a 5.5 out of 10 from me.
Now then as for where I personally go all of the images that I personally used in this very review well then boys and girls and as well as ladies and gentlemen I personally got all of the images that I personally used in this very review from Tenor IMP Awards . Com and Google Images. With my personally preferred website to use to get images from this film being Google Images simply because Google Images actually has images from this film really are up and on Google Images and plus pretty much much all of the images that I personally found on Google Images were all really very fairly high quality and as well as being as really very fairly high definition as well and so then horror fans we end this review as we always do with really our one and true goddess Elvira wishing us all some really very unpleasant dreams.
