Sequels while they can be a good thing if there done right sadly alot of them are done wrong because of the fact that the makers of those films are rushed into making them. This is thankfully not the case with this film as the last film to come out from this franchise was 28 Weeks Later which was released back in 2007 and yet it's only now that we're finally getting a new film but on top of that is the fact that we're getting another sequel film released in January of next year as well and so then join me as I give my SPOILER FILLED review of the film that has some one from London doing a Gerodie accent with the film in question being called simply just "28 Years Later" enjoy.
The plot of this film is when a young boy and his mother go the mainland to find a doctor to help cure the mother the two of them discover horrors beyond there imagination. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I im all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty not that bad as it was a decent plot that gave us alot of what we'd come to expect from the zombie genre however that's also the problem as when the first film came out there weren't being many zombie films made and yet now there are dozens of them every year and so this is a plot that should have worked and would have worked five or ten years ago but due to how many zombie films there are now it's a plot that does for the most part feel tired and worn out and while the film's marketing did a very good job of hiding what the actual plot of the film is when it's plot did indeed really get going it not only wasn't hard to work out where it was going but what the vast majority of the next films plot might be as well but to give this film some credit it did do a good job with it's plot by making feel alot more thought out then what it actually was with there being alot of thought put into this films plot which is something that does make alot of sense as this film was written by Alex Garland who is known for writing some really good plots in all of his films with the plot of this film also being really rather entertaining and as well as being really rather engaging as well in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
Starring in this film is Alfie Williams as Spike , Jodie Comer as Isla and Aaron Taylor-Johnson as Jamie. Also starring in this film is Ralph Fiennes as Dr. Ian Kelson , Edvin Ryding as Erik Sundqvist , Chi Lewis-Parry as Samson , Christopher Fulford as Sam , Amy Cameron as Rosey , Stella Gonet as Jenny , Erin Kellyman as Jimmy Ink , Emma Laird as Jimmima , Maura Bird as Jimmy Jones , Sam Locke as Jimmy Fox , Robert Rose as Jimmy Jimmy , Connor Neal as Jimmy Sh**e , Ghazi Al Ruffai as Jimmy Snake , Sandy Batchelor as Jimmy's Dad and Jack O'Connell as Sir Jimmy Crystal.
Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I im all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good. Which is something that's not really all that surprising as alot of Danny Boyle films have some really good acting in them no matter what the genre of film is as he's just that good of a director who really does know not only how to cast his actors but also how to geta good performance out of all of his actors as well with this of course being helped by the fact that alot of this films actors are a bunch of really good actors in their own right even if some of them like Jack O'Connell for example aren't that well known outside of the UK with even this films best actor not even being any of the films more well known actors as it's instead Alfie Williams as Spike who surely must have had a bad back by the end of this film because he and his performance just simply carried this movie so much so that should he choose to continue being an actor then he very well could make it as a big named star as he's just that good not only as an actor but in this film as well with him more then holding his own when it comes to acting opposite bigger named stars like Aaron Taylor-Johnson , Ralph Fiennes and Jodie Comer with this films acting really being helped by the fact that this films script is just so good that all this films actors have to do is just say the lines as they are written and a good performance will come out them naturally which is something that really does help to raise the overall quality of the acting that's in this very film.
With the first film we very clearly got the idea that the main theme of the film was all about family and what it means to people to keep the family that they have together in a world that forces them to be divided. Well the theme of this film seems to be humanity and the lengths that people will go to to keep it as we see all throughout the film what humanity looks like in this new world where as in the old pre-virus world it would mean doing something nice for a stranger here it could mean going to extreme lengths to make sure that a loved one gets the help that they need or it could mean something more then that with those ideas and themes of humanity being shown all throughout the film and while they don't quite work as good as the theme of the original film as here it felt forced like the makers of this film were trying super hard to work in the humanity aspect that the first film became known and beloved for having but in the first film it felt alot more natural as Jim himself was just trying to see if his own family was OK before then going on this life changing adventure and being forced to find and form a new family with a bunch of total strangers where as here tho that theme of humanity just isn't something that works all that well as that's something that we've seen play out alot in zombie media over the years so much so that when we see it played out here it losses all of the impact that it could have had and while it's not a bad theme to tackle in a zombie movie it's also not one that's done half as good as it could have been given not only who is writing this film but also who is directing it as well as by all rights given just who is making this film and the fact that they have tackled very similar themes and ideas in other movies then it should been a homerun to include it here in this film but it just doesn't work out all that well in this film.
SPOILERS START HERE!!!!!!!!!!
For those of you who are unaware just a few days ago it came out that there is a character in this film who dresses up like known pe*o and creep Jimmy Savile. If you don't know who that is go and look him up but let's just that while it does make sense why a character would be dressed like him since the characters of the mainland are forever trapped in the mid 2000's and it only came to light after his death in the 2010's just how much of a creep that he was it is still something that I can very easily offending both people in general and more importantly the families of those that he hurt an while it would make sense for characters that still think he's a nice guy to dress up like him knowing what we know now about him it does make it odd that the makers of this film would not only go out there way to have not just one but several characters dress up like him but even have a few of those characters also be called Jimmy which while it does help to make it crystal clear that the character of Sir Jimmy Crystal will be the main villain of the next film as even tho he only appears in one scene at the ed of the film there's just something about him that makes him creepy even tho he's acting all friendly to this little kid it still does make you wonder why the makers of this film who would know just how much of a creep that Jimmy Savile was would choose to make a character in this film look exactly like him even if the plan is to make him out to be a villain as all that will do is cause controversy something which is very slowly but surely happening right now and while it might amount to nothing those that do know just how much of an evil person that he was will be just as shocked that there's a character looking exactly like him in this film.
To give this film some credit it does spend alot of time making you think that the film and it's plot will be heading one way before ultimately going another way altogether. As for a good portion of the film we ae just with Spike and his dad Jamie as they venture across the mainland from there small island town with the film making us think that maybe Spike will be kidnapped by someone on the mainland and the dad will have to try ad get him back or something among those lines as the film does show us alot of scenes with them together just trying to kill mutations on the mainland but then they reveal that it's actually going another way by having Spike get into an argument with his dad back home before then secretly sneaking his mother to the mainland so that they can try and find a doctor for her illness which is later revealed to be terminal cancer which is such a great rug pull and is a great way to defy people's expectations as we're all thinking that the film is going to be about the father and son coming together in this harsh landscape but it actually turns out to be about the son learning to cope with the fact that his mother is dying and on top of that the film actually reveals that the mother knew that she was dying all along but chose not to tell Spike because she didn't want to worry him which is something that does track as we see very early on in the film that the two of them do share a bond with Spike even returning home from a party that was thrown for him just so that he can look after her which does make it all the more shocking and upsetting when we see her die as not only had we the audience seen what there bond is like but also because of the fact that the makers of this film chose to make both Isla and Spike some really likable characters in there own right.
What we know for sure is that this film was filmed back to back with the sequel film and while that would normally be a bad thing as it would mean that the first film is usually nothing more then a feature length trailer for the next film. Here it's more to show the fact that characters that played a big role in this film like Spike for example won't be playing that big of a role in the next film and characters who didn't play that big of a role in this film like Jamie might end up playing a bigger role in the next one as both of these films were apparently shot back to back and therefor it would be impossible for the actors to be in two places at once and just going by how good that this film was it does make you wonder how there going to top it in the next one because while there was some pressure for the makers of this film to top what they did in both 28 Days and 28 Weeks that was more due to the passage of time now tho they are not only telling the a continuation of the story from this film but there also making it a direct sequel to this film and making it somewhat of a legacy sequel by having Cillian Murphy apparently come back as Jim as well which does mean that the makers of that film will now be under alot of pressure to make a film that's not only a good film in it's own right but also one that's going to appease the people that have loved these films from day one and hopefully the makers of that film can learn from the mistakes of this film as instead of having a rather generic zombie plot maybe they could have something new and interesting much like how the first film had a new and interesting plot as well and who knows maybe they'll make the Dr. Ian Kelson more interesting as here he doesn't really get to do all that much.
Now then this film has / had an exact grand total running time of exactly one hour and fifty three minuets and forty two seconds. Which to be fair is close enough to what the first films running time was and so there is a precedent set for this films being as long as they are with it being helped by the fact that this film really does have the right amount of plot there to really cover that amount of running time but at the same time tho this film really doesn't use it's running time all that wisely tho as it doesn't fully develop it's plot enough to the point where you feel anything for these characters and want to see them making it out of this film alive and the film really doesn't develop it's characters all that well either which granted was also true for the first film but that film had one advantage and that was the fact that we were seeing this new world and these characters through the eyes of Jim and so if he didn't find out all that much about these characters then neither did we sadly tho that's something that this film really doesn't have and therefor the makers of this film should have gone the extra mile to give us something to make us connect to these characters and heck even one of the more characters in Dr. Ian Kelson doesn't actually fully appear until well over an hour into the film with him only being seen from either neck down or from behind before then which does mean that as good as an actor that Ralph Fiennes he can't be as good as we all know to him to be because of the fact that he has so little screen time in this film to fully flesh out his character but I really will admit that this film really does have some really good pacing to it tho.
So now then as this is a horror film that really does mean that I have to actually talk about the actual kills that are actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual kills that are actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good. While yes granted alot of this films kills are either just the zombies biting people are people just shooting zombies down with there guns that doesn't mean that aren't some diamonds in the rough as there are plenty of really gnarly kills to be found in this film be it Spike shooting and killing zombies with his arrows both near the start and near the end of the film or either Jimmy's gang coming in and killing off zombies in lots of crazy and insane ways with there scene being so awsome just seeing how they all take out what basically amounts to a very small army of zombies all by themselves but even those aren't that the best kills in the film as that honor goes to quite literally any time that we see an Alpha zombie kill someone as we see them just straight up rip off someone's head with the spine still attached and toss the head aside like it's basketball which is something that never gets old as it's just so fun and such a unique kill to have in a zombie film as typically zombies in zombie movies just bite people and if they want to be really gory they'll rip them in half and that's really it and so to see a zombie just rip off someone's head with the spine still attached to it is always going to be a really fun kill in a film that's filled to the brim with some really cool kills in it's own right in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
SPOILERS END HERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Overall it's safe to say that 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple now has some really pretty big shoes to fill as this film was a really good film and while it might not please everyone that really likes the original two movies this one is more then good enough in it's right and really is sure to please the mainstream audience members in my freaking opinions anyways / at least. Now then i've talked about all of the good and as well as all of the bad things that are in this very film in this very review and as such that really does mean that this very film really does ern itself a grand old score of exactly an 8 out of 10 from me.
Now then as for where I personally got all of the images that I personally used in this very review well then boys and girls and as well as ladies and gentlemen I personally got all of the images that I personally used in this very review from the official 28 Days Later fandom wiki page , Tenor , IMP Awards . Com and Google Images. With my personally preferred website to use to get images from this film being the official 28 Days Later fandom wiki page simply because the official 28 Days Later fandom wiki page actually has images from this film really are up and on the official 28 Days Later fandom wiki page and plus pretty much much all of the images that I personally found on the official 28 Days Later fandom wiki page were all really very fairly high quality and as well as being as really very fairly high definition as well and so then horror fans we end this review as we always do with really our one and true goddess Elvira wishing us all some really very unpleasant dreams.
