Both this week and next week are turning out to be a pretty good few weeks for horror fans as not only do we have 28 Years Later out but next week also sees the release of another highly anticipated sequel. That being M3gan 2.0 as such you all just knew that I had to produce a tie in review for that film and really there was no other film that was even in contention for this review even tho The Asylum have also released there knock off M3gan movie it only made sense that the tie in review be the first film and so then join me as I review the film that saw a robotic doll with a killer attitude be released with the film in question being called simply just "M3Gan" enjoy.
The plot of this film is when her parents and she is sent to live with aunt eight year old Cady finds comfort in one of the prototype robots that her aunt made to he sold as toy only for the doll to take things to far. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good with this films plot being just as fun and as campy as it set up would suggest with the plot being kind of like a more modern update from the plot of Child's Play only the film knows full well what audience it's trying to reach and works the plot around that which is something that does make this films plot a really fun to watch as while yes it is something that was done better in the original Child's Play movie how it's done here makes it look like that it was done with such a nudge and wink to the audience that you can't help but be engrossed by it and while the films main target audience is quite easily the TikTok crowd the film does take it's plot seriously enough for it to be liked by some older people as well and is proof that you can have a plot that's fun and campy but when it needs to touch upon some serious issues and not have it feel out of place which it very easily could have done given the films target audience with the more serious elements of the films plot being handled really well with them being just as well done as the films more campy elements as well with the plot of this film also being really rather entertaining and as well as being really rather engaging as well in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
Starring in this film is Allison Williams as Gemma , Violet McGraw as Cady and Ronny Chieng as David. Also starring in this film is Brian Jordan Alvarez as Cole , Jen Van Epps as Tess , Stephane Garneau-Monten as Kurt , Lori Dungey as Celia , Amy Usherwood as Lydia , Jack Cassidy as Brandon , Michael Saccente as Greg , Samson Chan-Boon as Officer Carter , Kira Josephson as Ava , Renee Lyons as Holly , Arlo Green as Ryan , Amie Donald as M3GAN and Jenna Davis as The Voice Of M3GAN.
Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good. With all of this films actors turning in some really good performances which is something that was quite shocking as quite alot of this films actors are a bunch of unknown or at best very little known actors and therefor it would have been foolish of anyone to expect a good or even great performance from any of them and yet that's exactly what we got with all of this films actors turning in some really good performances with the fact that there not really that well known actually helping the film out as it means that us the audience can actually see the character alot more easier then what we would have been able to if they cast a more well known face in the film ad then all your doing is just seeing the actor and not that character with all this films characters being perfectly well cast in this film so much so that it's hard to picture anyone else playing these roles as there all just so good in this film in this film with the two best actors in this film being Amie Donald and Jenna Davis as even tho they both play M3GAN with Amie physically playing the character and Jenna doing her voice they both work well with there performances not only getting across the characters sass and attitude in the more campy and comedic scenes but when they need to they also make her really threatening and kind of creepy as well with the acting that's in this very film really being helped by the fact that this films script is just so good that all this films actors have to do is just say the lines as they are written and a good performance will come out of them naturally which is something that really does help to raise the overall quality of the acting that's in this very film.
This film does find a unique way to tell the story of a child learning to cope with the death of her parents and all of the change that does come with that. As it has M3GAN basically act as another parental figure for Cady while she's healing from loosing both of her parents and showing how a kid can and does get attached to things does feel true to life as kids will super easily get attached to anything especially is there's no parent there to regulate it or to keep on eye on it to make sure that the kid isn't becoming to possessive of whatever it is that there clinging on to then it can become a problem something that we do see in this film as M3GAN was only designed to help kids deal with grief and that's it but there's no time limit on when that stops as at somepoint someone like a parent or another family does have to step in and that's somethin that this film does show beautifully as we see cady basically asking Gemma to step up and be the mother and father figure that Cady needs now more then ever but because of the fact that Gemma is so focused on her work she just lets Cady play with this robot that she's building all the time and because of that when she does act out near the end of the film when Gemma tells her that M3GAN isn't real then Cady can't cope with that as to her it would be like loosing another loved one and no kid should ever have to experience something like that and to the films credit it does handle that in a more mature way as it doesn't quite demonize Gemma for her actions as she's just lost someone close to her as well but it doesn't quite make her out to be a good parental figure for Cady either with the film very much making it clear that Gemma is working all of this out as she goes along much like how Cady is as well.
Gemma herself is basically a workaholic with her not really being able to give the Cady the time that she really needs. Which is something that does work both for and against the film it works for the film in the way that it does give her a character arc where he learns to be a good parental figure and not to be so hyperfused on work all of the time but at the same time tho it works against the film in the way that anybody with eyeballs can see that she's not fit to look after a kid and yet the social worker still lets Cady stay with her which doesn't make sense as they should always put the child's best interests first and yet time and time again from quite literally the first scene of the movie onwards we see that both she and Cady don't really get along and yet the social worker still things that staying with Gemma is what's best for Cady now granted this film isn't meant to be taken seriously but given that they do take alot of time to talk about death and how that can effect little kids then maybe the makers of this film should have included something to make it all the more reasonable that staying with Gemma is what's best for the kid a we get nothing for a large early portion of the film with the two of them very slowly but surely starting to form a bond through M3GAN and even then it's only because of the fact that the doll might be killing people and Gemma doesn't tell cady about it and while Gemma does have an interesting character arc her character just wasn't that interesting as the film doesn't really give her much in the way of a personality outside of the fact that she's a workaholic who likes to do things a certain way and that's really it and that's not enough to make her interesting as we don't get to see what her positive traits are only her negative ones and we don't get to find out she likes or dislikes thus making her more of a one dimensional character.
To give this film some credit it does know what kind of audience that it's trying to go after and isn't afraid of just going after that particular audience. With the film being made to appease alot of the TikTok generation as heck even M3GAN's dance went popular on the site with the film not really being afraid to keep them happy which in all fairness does add a breath of fresh air to the film as it would have been super easy for the makers of this film to make this film a very super serious film akin to the original Child's Play movie and play everything straight but because of the fact that the makers know what kind of audience that there going after they do take the time that they needed to to make the film a little bit more lighter in tone in places which granted could create some tonal whiplash especially when M3GAN does start of killing people in some really fun ways but it works because of the fact that the makers of this film took the time to set up those deaths in ways that do feel natural as well with the film having alot of really campy moments that only serve to highlight just how absurd the very idea is of having a robotic doll gain self awareness and start killing people as that idea on it's own is a very silly and campy idea and therefor playing it for laughs alot of the time only serves to make the film more fun to watch and while yes granted it would have worked just as well perhaps even better if the film did play take it self more seriously as that would mean that we wouldn't get to have much in the way of tonal whiplash like the fact that before M3GAN kills the oy that's been bullying Cady at this camp we get a more slightly comedic scene with Gemma and one of the parents and it's just something that does feel out of place given how the rest of sequence goes.
To say that this film has alot of darkly funny moments in it would be like saying the exact same thing about the original Robocop. As this is film that does have some darkly funny jokes in it with the film itself opening up on a joke about a kids dog dying only to then have it be replaced by a kids toy which just right away lets you know what kind of film that your going to be watching with the film being filled to the brim with moments like that all throughout and all of them work as this film is just painfully funny to watch at time so much so that you could class this film as a horror comedy and it would be completely justifiable in doing so with M3GAN herself getting alot of laughs as she just gets more and more frustrated with Cady both not washing her hands after she's been to the bathroom and oddly enough not even flushing the toilet either which was a really funny joke and is actually the best joke in the whole entire film as it just shows you alot of of the sass that M3GAN does have something which the marketing for the sequel has leaned into and while the joke could have ended with just Cady washing her hands as the toilet half of the joke is just a tad bit disgusting even for a horror film it is something that does work well enough in this film as kids around Cady's age do more then likely forget things like that and even Gemma's boss David does have some funny one liners like the fact that he orders his assistant to go and get him drink and the next time that we see the assistant he's there in the lift with that drink in hand which was a funny little touch and it is something that really does prove that the makers of this film knew exactly what kind of film that they were making and were just having fun with it and that is something that does shine through in the final film.
Now then this film has / had an exact grand total running time of exactly none hour and forty one minuets ad fifty six seconds. Which to be fait t this film is a pretty solid running time for this film to have as this film does the right amount of plot there to really cover that amount of running time but tho this film really doesn't use it's running time all that wisely as not all of the films main characters are that well developed with really the only two getting alot of development being both Gemma and Cady and that's really it with none of this films side characters getting any sort of character development whatsoever as we the audience don't even get to find out all that much about this films other characters either with alot of them just being there so that M3GAN ha people to kill near the end of the film and that's really it which isn't enough to fully justify them being them in this film with even the plot of this film not really being that well developed either which isn't that big of an issue as this film was never meant to have a deep plot to it and therefor expecting it's plot to be well developed and thought out would only get in the way of just how fun that this films plot can be but at the same time tho it would have helped this film out quite alot if it's plot was more thought out like we could have seen how the death of Cady's father effected Gemma as she was his sister afterall but the film doesn't give us the chance to see that despite the fact that that's something that both Gemma and Cady could have bonded over outside of the fact that they both just fought and won against a killer robot doll but I really will admit that this film really does have some really good pacing to it tho.
So now then as this is a horror film that really does mean that I have to actually talk about the actual horror that's actually featured / presented to us un this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual horror that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good. With this film not really being all that focused on it's horror aspect this was being targeted to much more younger audience then what horror films are typically aiming for which does mean that we don't get all that much of the kills which would usually be a bad thing as you always to see the kills in a horror film but given the fact that this film is more of a comedy then it is a straight up horror film it does make sense that we don't get to see that much of the kills in this film at least not in the theatrical cut of the film where as in the Unseen Edition of the film you do get to see more of the films kills with the films kills looking really good even tho the only thing that we really only see is more gore and that's really it with the best kill in the film not being just one kill in particular as it's the whole dance and escape sequence that M3GAN does in the third act as that was just a fun sequence to see with everything coming together beautifully from the music to the acting and even the gore that we see when she does finally kill David and then blame it on Kurt before killing him of as well which was such a nice touch as it shows us just how smart that she is as well as how deadly that she is as well with the same thing also being true for alot of this films kills as well in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
Overall while M3GAN 2.0 will be taking a more action horror route with it's film it's not all that hard to see why this film took the world by storm as while yes it's not a perfect film by any stretch of the imagination it is still a fun filled film to watch and that's more then enough to make this film worth watching as sometimes just being a fun film really is more enough in my freaking opinions anyways / at least. Now then i've talked about all of the good and as well as all of the bad things that are in this very film in this very review and as such that really does mean that this film really does earn itself a grand old score of exactly a 7.5 out of 10 from me.
Now then as for where I personally got all of the images that I personally used in this very review well the boys and girls and as well as ladies and gentlemen I personally got all of the images that I personally used in this very review from the official M3GAN fandom wiki page , Tenor , IMP Awards . Com and Google Images. With my personally preferred website to use to get images from this film being the official M3GAN fandom wiki page simply because Google Images actually has images from this film really are up and on the official M3GAN fandom wiki page and plus pretty much much all of the images that I personally found on the official M3GAN fandom wiki page were all really very fairly high quality and as well as being as really very fairly high definition as well and so then horror fans we end this review as we always do with really our one and true goddess Elvira wishing us all some really very unpleasant dreams.
