These days it seems like the only way to truly get the movie that you want made out is to release it unrated. Which is a huge gamble on any studio to make and yet not only have we had two unrated films come out in the past few years one of them was even a massive hit movie and well the other one has just been released and so then join me as I give you my SPOILER FILLED review of the film that really does need to be seen to be believed with the film in question being called simply just "The Toxic Avenger" enjoy.
The plot of this film is when an employee gets dropped into some toxic waste he becomes heavily mutated and sets out to get revenge on those that wronged him included his evil and corrupt boss. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good with this films plot being so much more better then what it really had any right to be as by all rights this films plot should have been really bad but because of the fact that the film has this kind of over the top and campy tone to it that does make it feel alot more like a dark gritty cartoon then the actual cartoon show that the first film spawned it does kind of get away with it as this is a plot that's not to be taken seriously and is meant to be a whole lot of fun and that's exactly what it ends up being with the plot of this film being a throwback to films like Class Of Nuke 'Em High where they don't really take themselves that seriously but yet at the same time you do kind of by into them with this being a case where being released unrated does help the plot of the film as while the films plot wouldn't be that much effected if this film was rated the fact that it's not however does mean that the plot can go to those more weird and wacky places that it might not have been ale to go to if this film did have a rating with the plot of this film also being really rather entertaining and as well as being really rather engaging as well in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
Starring in this film is Peter Dinklage as Winston Gooze / the voice of the The Toxic Avenger and Jacob Tremblay as Wade. Also starring in this film is Taylour Paige as J.J. Doherty , Kevin Bacon as Bob Garbinger , Sarah Niles as Mayor Togar , Julia Davis as Kissy Sturnevan , Julian Kostov as Budd Berserk , David Yow as Guthrie Stockins , this film writer and director Macon Blair as Dennis , Rebecca O'Mara as Shelly Gooze , Jonny Coyne as Thad Barkabus , Jane Levy as the voice of the Cheerful Insurance Representative , Luisa Guerreiro as The Toxic Avenger and Elijah Wood as Fritz Garbinger.
Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty shockingly good. With all of this films actors turning in some surprisingly good performances in this film which is something that both is and yet also isn't shocking it isn't shocking in the way that alot of this films actors are a bunch of really good actors in their own right but at the same time tho this is also a film that you really don't expect good acting from in the first place as it's premise is so ludacris that you'd be forgiven for thinking that this film had some really bad acting in it and yet all we got in this film was some really good acting with it being clear as day that all of this films actors understood just what kind of a film that they were in and what kind of tone that the film had and therefor just really hammed up all of their performances and while it would have been very easy to say that Peter Dinklage is the films best actor the fact is he's not as that honor goes to so someone who had exactly no lines of dialog in the film that being Luisa Guerreiro who physically played The Toxic Avenger as all Peter Dinklage did when his character got mutated was voice him with Luisa adding so much character and personality to the character all of which was done without uttering a single word of dialog and given that she had to wear all that make up that is something that would have been a hard task to achieve at the best of times with the acting that's in this very film really being helped by the fact that this films script is just so good that all this films actors have to do is just say the lines as they are written and a good performance will come out pf them naturally which is something that really does help to raise the overall quality of the acting that's in this very film.
Doing the CGI for this film is Fangs FX , Fourth Seal Studios , Millennium FX , Mr. X. , Tippett Studio and Worldwide FX. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual CGI that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual CGI that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good with this being quite shocking as you don't usually think that films that have a small budget like this one has would have good looking CGI to it and yet that's exactly what this film does have as while yes granted this film does mostly use practical effects they also mix to with CGI which is something that does make it harder to tell what was real and what was done in a computer and while the film does have some really obvious back replacements alot of the time it could also be argued that that does add to the overall charm of the film as it does give this film a look that makes it look like the cheap direct to VHS horror films of the eighties but with that being said tho this isn't the eighties and therefor there should have been more time devoted to making sure that the films effects look as good as they possibly could have done and while this might not have been possible as it's not been revealed just what the films budget is in the first place given the fact that it's a remake of a cult horror film with the same production company behind the original film it's not hard to assume that this film had a small budget to begin with and therefor had a small effects budget and with that in mind the makers of the film did do the best with what little effects budget that they might have had to begin with.
SPOILERS START HERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Just to give you all an idea of how big of a deal that this film could be it was filmed and fully completed all the way back in 2023. With it only just seeing the day of light this year because of the fact that big Hollywood studios deemed the film to be "unreleasable" this is despite the fact that Terrifier 3 another unrated film with lots of gore and violence came out a year prior and proved that films with lots of gore and violence can be hit films so it's odd that they passed on this film which by the way is tamer then Terrifier 3 is all due to concerns about the violence shown in the film which does go to show you that Hollywood right now is scared of taking chances on these smaller films when Hollywood itself was built on taking chances and was built on leading the pack when it comes to the entertainment industry but somewhere down the line they lost there courage and stopped taking chances on unrated films because they very easily could have released this film unrated and it still would have worked why because of the fact that this is still a good film and that's not due to it's violent nature altho that is a big part of it but it's also due to the fact that it has likable characters and that it has a really strong plot it got all of the basics down so it would have made any studio that chose to release this film some small amount of money but because of the fact that they got scared of releasing an unrated film it now means that Cineverse the company that actually had the courage to pick the film up is now going to make all of the money that they could have been making and with this film already making $2.2 million American dollars at the box office this should hopefully prove to big studios that there is money to be made in releasing these unrated films on the big screen.
With this film being a horror action comedy that does mean that it does have to split it focus three ways and focus on each one of those elements equally. This is something that this film does fail to do sadly as while the action and the comedy aspects are really good the film is lacking in anything that's even close to horror as the only thing that's even remotely close to being scary in this film is the look of The Toxic Avenger himself and that's really it as there's not even kind of jump scare in this film altho in saying that it could also be argued that what makes the film is the amount of gore that's on show which would be a fair enough argument to make but at the same time tho for a film that's billed as being a horror film as well as an action film and a comedy film you do want some genuinely good scares in there for good measure as that would mean that the people that love horror films will be happy but in saying that tho the film does have alot of painfully funny moments in it be it from the title cards that pop up on screen for all of the different locations to even alot of the characters names all of which feel right at home in cult type of film bottom line there's going to be something funny in this film for every one with there being one or two good jokes every few minuets and the few that don't land don't matter because of the fact that the film throws so many jokes at you anyway that it's already telling one or two good jokes the second that that bad one has been told with it being clear as day that this films writer and director Macon Blair really does know how to tell a good joke as alot of the films jokes are just that painfully funny in the final cut of the film.
Sadly tho it's not all good news for this film as this film does have a few bad things about it like for example the stepfather and son able between Winston an Wade which is not only very badly done in the first place as the film makes a big deal about Wade calling Winston dad near the end of the film when he also does it earlier on in the film as well with that part of the film feeling not only rushed but also unneeded as well. With the film even having a weak villain in Bob Garbinger as we get to find out next to nothing about this character other then the fact that he's cruel to his brother and that's really it as we don't even know why he is the way that he is in the first place which just makes him come across as being evil for the sake of being evil as really you could have had literally any other character about from Toxie play Bob's role in the movie and nothing would change as that's how little that we the audience get to find out about him as a character when it would have helped the film out quite alot if we did get some background information on him and while there is chance that we might be getting that in the graphic novel version of the of the film it is still something that should have been in this film as that would have made it easier for us the audience to decide on if we like or if we hate him as a character and while yes we do get to find out what his end goal is which is basically to use Toxies mutation as a way to make money by selling to the people of the greatly names St. Roma's Village that's not enough to make him a memorable character in his ow right rather all it does is make you wish that there was more effort put into him as a character.
Now then this film has / had an exact grand total running time of exactly one hour and thirty minuets and twenty four seconds. While this might be seen as being a bad thing for alot of superhero type films given just how much alot of them would have to set up first and still tell a good story given that this film really isn't a superhero film it dos kind of work with that more shorter running time with the film even having the right amount of plot there to really cover that amount of running time with this film even using it's running time wisely in one respect with that being the fact that the plot of the film is really well developed as alot of the films plot is really well developed with things being set up all throughout the film in the background which then turn out to play a slightly bigger role in the films climax with the best example of this being a concert that gets mentioned in one scene near the start of the film but then it turns out that the band that are playing the show are also these guards that are hired by Bob's brother to take out Toxie and J.J. with Toxie taking them out during the concert sadly tho this isn't something that extends to the films characters as they aren't that well developed at all with characters like J.J. Bob , Fritz , Wade and Kissy not really being given much time to get across just what it is that there personalities are meant to be in the first place which is something that does make them come across as being really forgettable characters which is something that does make sense as the film does mostly focus on Winston but at the same time tho there should have been some effort to make the side characters just as memorable as what the main character of the film is but I really will admit that this film really does have some really good pacing to it tho.
So now then as this is ana action film that really does mean that I have to actually talking about the actual action that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual action that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good. With this films action being where we get to see alot of the over the top gore that scared alot of the big Hollywood studios of releasing this film in the first place and while the gore that does help to make the actin all the more crazy and entertaining then what it already is this films action is also really creative with this being due to the fact that the hero of the film is not only a small person but also uses a mop as his main weapon which is something that does keep all of the films actions scenes from getting dull and boring as you never really know just what it is that the film is going to do next with the best action scene in the whole entire film being he films third act as while the gore isn't as over the top in that sequence it is still a really over the top sequence in it's own right as Winston and a now fully mutated Bob duke it out all over Bob's estate with it going on for so long that it does become comical as both characters survive things that really should have killed them which could be seen as being over kill but at the same time tho it is also something that does feel true to the films more cartoonish nature and tone something which is also true for the rest of the films action as well as this films action is filled to the brim with over the top things in all of them as well in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
SPOILERS END HERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Overall out of this film an the new Red Sonja film which got released on the exact same day as this film did this film is quite easily the better of the two films as this film is nothing more then pure fun to watch with this film hopefully proving to big hollywood studios that people actually want to see unrated film in my freaking opinions anyways / at least. Now then i've talked about all of the good and as well as all of the bad things that are in this very film in this very review and as such that really does mean that this very film really does earn itself a grand old score of exactly an 8 out of 10 from me.
Now then as for where I personally got all of the images that I personally used in this very review well then boys and girls and as well as ladies and gentlemen I personally got all of the images that I personally used in this very review from Tenor , IMP Awards . Com and Google Images. With my personally preferred website to use to get images from this film being Google Images simply because Google Images actually has images from this film really are up and on Google Images and plus pretty much much all of the images that I personally found on Google Images were all really very fairly high quality and as well as being as really very fairly high definition as well and so then horror fans we end this review as we always do with really our one and true goddess Elvira wishing us all some really very unpleasant dreams.
