Believe it or not it used to be decades inbetween the release of a new Evil Dead film and now it's going to be very few years. With the next installment Evil Dead Wrath currently in production but before we get to that film the latest installment of the franchise has just been released and well I just had to talk about the film the very first chance that I got and so then join me as I give you my SPOILER FILLED review of the film that is all about fire with the film in question being called simply just "Evil Dead Burn" enjoy.
The plot of this film during a family reunion various family members find there relationships tested when they start to turn into deadites. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally though / felt that the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good. Whilst t could be argued that the film is treading on very familiar ground with it's plot the film does still tell this story in a good and interesting with the plot itself being one that does keep you hooked from start to finish but at the same time tho there could have been more meat to this films plot. Without going into spoilers the film does set up the fact that two characters don't really like each other and yet they do nothing with it with it not really effecting the plot of the film yet that is something that could have made the plot of this film be all the more interesting as it would have been something new in this franchise, yet at the same time tho the makers of this film did do the best that they could have done with this plot as this is a plot that doesn't really allow you to go that deep with it's themes or it's characters and that is fine for an Evil Dead film as it does allow the makers f this film to just go off the wall crazy with this being where the films plot is allowed to excel and when the plot of this film does go off the wall insane that's when it gets to be alot of fun to watch and while alot of the stuff early on in the film is still really good watch none of it compares to when the film does go insane with it's plot as that's when we see that the makers of this film really did have a great idea of this films plot and that idea works really well in this film with the plot of this film also being really rather entertaining and as well as being really rather engaging as well in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
Starring in this film is Planet B and Dune: Part Two star Souheila Yacoub as Alice and Pearl and Power Rangers S.P.D star Tandi Wright as Susan. Also starring in this film is Wednesday and Daredevil: Born Again star star Hunter Doohan as Joseph and Luciane Buchanan as Thya , Erroll Shand as Edgar , Maude Davey as Polly , George Pullar as Will , Tapiwa Soropa as Mike , Keanu Karim as Jared and Alain Chabat as Alice's Dad.
Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally though / felt that the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good. The fact that we have some really good acting in this film is something that is both a surprise and yet at the same time not really a surprise it's a surprise due to the fact that alot of this films actors are very little known at best actor but at the same time those actors that are well known like for example Hunter Doohan do help to give the film some good performances in this film. With the best actor in this film being Souheila Yacoub as Alice as she is just so good in this film with being able to let us know that this character does have a past with the families son Will whilst at the same time showing us that she does try to care about this family all of which are things that do make her performance one that is quite interesting to watch with her being able to to truly make it as an actor if she really wanted to as she does have something about her that makes her a likable actor with her performance being one that does show that she knows how to turn in a good performance as she has this inner strength inside of her which is something that really does shine through in her performance in this film. With the acting that's in this film not really being helped by the fact that this films script is just so bad as it gives none of this films actors absolutely anything to work with interms of what it is that there actual characters personalities are even meant to be in the first place which is something that really does harm the overall quality of the acting that's in this very film.
Without going into spoilers about the family what can be said about them is that they are not the best group of characters in this film. As alot of them are very note with them all having the same note when it comes to how they feel about a certain character in this film but at the same time tho given the fact that they've just gone through something utterly horrible it is understandable that they would be kind of standoffish for reasons that sadly cannot be said as it is a huge spoiler but it is something that will make sense if you see the film heck it is hard to feel sorry for them as yes they do g through something tragic at the start of the film but how they act towards this one person during the whole course of the film is something that does make them truly horrid people. There is some attempt to make them feel a bit more thought out as both characters and as people like with the character of Susan for example with her and Alice even having a truly great scene near the end of the film where you think that it's going to go one way but then it ends up going a completely different way and yet it is something that does still work for this film and while the previous film handled the whole family aspect a little bit better then they do in this film as in the previous they do show people that even tho they argue with each other they do still like each other which is something that not only made it easier to buy into them as a family but also like them as characters yet here in this film it did appear to be the opposite that's true as the family members are made to be so unlikeable not only towards this one persona but also towards each other as well that you just don't end up buying them as this tightknit family unit and even worse being the fact that you don't end up liking them as characters and therefor when the worse things happen in the film you don't feel sorry for them rather you end up cheering that it's happened.
SPOILERS START HERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
There are two names that were deliberately left off of the list of actors that are in this film those being Greta Van Den Brink as Deadite Jessica and Alyssa Sutherland as Deadite Ellie. While the deadite Jessica thing might not be a big deal it's the deadite Ellie part that is as it does confirm that this film takes place sometime after the events of Evil Dead Rise with film in it's own way acting as a sequel to that film and heck the fact that they even brought back Jessica at all at the start of the film was something that they never had to do as the makers of this film never bring back certain Deadites rather they would just bring back Ash and that's it and yet here we have a very strong connection to the previous film and heck we even get to the head of the girl that Jessica scalped at the start of the previous film which is a nice little nod to the events of that that film. To be frank when I realized that the opening was taking place in the exact same lake as the opening of the previous film I started to freak out a little bit as that was just such a cool little thing that no one would have picked up on in the first place and then they go the extra mile by having these small nods to the opening of that film and while Ellie doesn't appear in the main body of the film with her only appearing in the films post-credits scene it was still a fun little nod and wink to the previous film as even in the original three films they never brought back alot of the characters from the film that came before it and therefor it was fun to see them again and heck Jessica's scenes at the start of the film actually play a part in the films plot as that's how the son Will died by crashing his car drunkenly into her with her passing on the deadite curse onto Will thus kickstarting of the events of this film.
There is one major thing about the opening that doesn't quite work and that's the fact that even tho they do do something new by telling the same story essentially from different points of view. Which is a good idea with the first part very much feeling like an Evil Dead movie as it does do a good job of getting you in the mood for the rest of the film the issue is tho is that second part both looks and feels like a completely different movie with it only really feeling like an Evil Dead when it catches up with the first part with the second part of the opening feeling something that you would see in an adult drama and not something that you would want to see in a horror film as while it does show us how Will dies in the film it good as well doesn't have that much of a connection to the rest of the film. This is not to say that having a two part opening is a bad thing infact it is something that does make this film stand out as the previous film only told one story which isn't connected to the plot of that film where as here everything about the whole opening does connect to the film rather it's the fact that the second part could be the opening to something else other then an Evil Dead movie that throws it off as there is nothing about that second part that makes it look and feel like an Evil Dead movie as the first part has this dirty and grimy almost homemade look to it that does make it feel right at home with these movies and yet when it cuts to the second part everything is polished and looking as perfect as it could be which is something that would have been fine if this was a drama but it's not and this is something that does create this odd disconnect between the two parts of the film, heck you could say that as the first part is mainly being told from Jessica's POV that things look grimy because of it and with the second part being told from Will's point of view then that would explain why the film looks polished but even when the two of them combine it still looks polished and perfect.
This film does carry on the trend set by the previous two films by giving us a bada*s main female character which in this case is Alice. While she is no Beth or Mia she is still a fairly decent character as we do see get to struggle with getting the rest of the family to like her after the death of Will and heck even Will at times didn't like her and while that is a great jumping off point for the character it does feel like that the makers of this film went over board with trying to make her a strong character as they also make her an abuse survivor was it turns out she was abuses by Will himself and yet they don't really show her overcoming that over the course of the film and while it could be argue that she does have flaws as she does want alot of people to like her to the point where it could be argued that she is more of a people pleaser and less of her own person but that's not a major character flaw rather that's just because of the situation that she is in in the first place. To be fair Alice on paper could have made for a really fun character as all of the basics are there for her to be this bada*s of a character that when push does indeed come to shove it is really earned but the film never gives her those moments to truly earn the fact that she is this tough as nails character that is capable of killing all of these people whereas in the previous films the makers of those film did go out of there to make it believable that both Beth and Mia could kill all of the people that they need to as they gave them flaws that they had to over come and become stronger because of it whereas here in this film it felt like that the makers of this film had a good idea for a strong female character put didn't want to put in the work to make her a stronger character, as on paper yes she should have worked but there still needed to be thought and effort put into her and part of that does include giving her not only a personality but also character flaws as these are things that would make her a more likable character when compared to the rest of the family whom it could be argued are the films main villains.
Now then this film has / had an exact grand total running time of exactly one hour and forty two minuets and thirty four seconds. Which whilst that is still a perfectly solid running time for this film to have in the first place it is also a tad bit on the long side as while the film doesn't take all that long to really get going it does however start to drag around the middle to the ed of the film with this being something that could have been fixed if the film was even five minuets shorter which it very easily could have been as you would have to cut a few scenes out of the film none of which are actually important to the main plot of the film in the first place this is despite the fact that this film really does have the right amount of plot there to cover that amount of running time in the first place. Yet even with this extra running time this film still doesn't use it's running time all that wisely a while this film is around fifteen minuets longer then Evil Dead Rise was the plot of that film felt more developed whereas here the makers of this film seem to be more interested in giving us other things that add nothing to the overall plot with the films plot at best feel more like an afterthought in the film when compared to what else that the film has going on for it with the makers of this film clearly being more interested in making sure that we k now that this family hates Alice then they are in giving us a well thought out plot. This is something that does also effect the films character development as well as none of this films characters get any kind of character development whatever as Susan still hates Alice by the end of the film this is despite the fact that Alice actually goes out of her way to try and save Susan in the film and Alice herself while there is an attempt there to make her a well thought out character even she gets nothing in terms of character development just going back the previous film again Beth in that film went from not being sure how she felt about kids to openly protecting them when the time comes which yes is a small thing but it's a small thing that shows us just how she has grown in the film whereas here with Alice there was no scene like that in the film they did have a scene with Susan near the end where Alice just straight up tells her what Will did to her but she learns nothing from that scene and both Susan and Alice don't grow because of that scene rather they remain stuck in the same place with it being clear as day that the makers of this film were more focused on giving us more Deadites then they were in giving us character development but I really will admit that this film really does have some really good pacing to it it tho.
So now then as this is a horror film that really does mean that I gave to actually talk about the actual kills that are actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual kills that are actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good. Heck one could even say that this films kills are the best thing about the film as this is where the film gets to be as off the rails as it really should have been with there not only being alot of blood in this film but we also get to see some really creative angles in the film all of which do add to the chaotic nature of the kills which is how the kills in this franchise feel as this is a franchise where you can and will get killed of in a really over the top way and therefor having these creative angles and camera movements combined wit alot of blood is something that will help with that. With the best kill in the whole entire film being the death of Thya as when she and her brother Joseph are in the car driving there slowly turning dad Edgar to the hospital after collapsing after killing the family dog Max at dinner Edgar suddenly start to violently attack both of them in the car with him killing Thya by grabbing the top of chair in the car and stabbing her with it through her throat which was such a unique kill and while it won't be getting Dead Meats "Golden Chainsaw" ward should they eventually do a kill cunt on this film it was a really fun and creative kill as you don't get to see any kills in horror films done like that and while it doesn't catch you off guard in the slightest it is something that does let you know that this once beloved family member is now willing to kill his own children with the rest of the films kills being just as good as well in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
SPOILERS END HERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Overall it really is hard to say if this film is better then Evil Dead Rise or not as this film does copy alot of the things that were in that film but what can be said is that this film is still a really good film it's just one that is trying a bit to hard to be the next Evil Dead Rise and because of that it has no real identity of it's own in my freaking opinions anyways / at least. Now then i've talked about all of the good and as well as all of the bad things that are in this very film in this very review and as such that really does mean that this very film really does earn itself a grand old score of exactly a 7 out of 10 from me.
Now then as for where I personally got all of the images that I personally used in this very film well then boys and girls and a well as ladies and gentlemen I personally got all of the images that I personally used in this very review from Tenor , IMP Awards . Com and Google Images. With my personally preferred website to use to get images from this film being Google Images simply because Google Images actually has images from this film really are up and on Google Images and plus pretty much much all of the images that I personally found on Google Images were all really very fairly high quality and as well as being as really very fairly high definition as well and so then horror fans we end this review as we always do with really our one and true goddess Elvira wishing us all some really very unpleasant dreams.
