Every so often there comes along a movie that just takes the box office by storm and beats even big budgeted films. This is vert much the case with the film that i'm going to be talking to you all about today as even tho the film was released all the way back in may and spent a good few weeks at the top of the box office it is STILL in the top films at the box office and is still making a boat load of money and so then join me as I review the film that is the seventh highest grossing film of all time for 2026 with the film in question being called simply just "Obsession" enjoy.
The plot of this film is when a man called Bear uses novelty wish giving toy to make his crush fall in love with him only for her to start to go more and more insane. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good. Believe all the hype that people say about the films plot as it is just that good with the fact that it is an original story ad not a remake , reboot or sequel being something that does make it all the more better as now the makers of this film have to put in the effort to make the plot of the film good in the first place and it is something that does pay off really well. Granted not alot actually does happen for alot of the film with the films plot being pretty thin at best however this is because of the fact that the film is a slowburner with the film really taking it's time in telling its plot and it is something that does work as while horror audiences today are more use to faster plots that move at a faster pace this is a film where the plot would be damaged if it did move at a quicker pace as alot of what makes this films plot for work as well as it does in the first place is the fact that it is allowed to build up tension and not only put you in this state of unease but keep you there, while the plot of this film would have worked just as well if there was more to this plot the fact that it was kept as simple as it is does allow for alot of elements to be more thought out with the plot of this film also being really rather entertaining and as well as being really rather engaging as well in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
Starring in this film is Michael Johnston as Baron "Bear" Bailey and Superman & Lois star Inde Navarrette as Nikki Freeman. Also starring in this film is Cooper Tomlinson as Ian , The Hate U Give star Megan Lawless as Sarah Harper , Andy Richter as Carter Harper , Haley Fitzgerald as Viola , Darin Toonder as Harry and this films writer and director Curry Barker as the voice of the One Wish Willow Customer Service Representative.
Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good. To be frank this films acting is so much more better then what it really had any right to be as nobody would have expected this film to have good acting in it due to the fact that all of this films are very little known actors and yet they all hit it out of park with there acting with all of them turning in some really good performances in this film which has to speak to the skill of Curry Barker as both a writer and a director as even tho he had only made one feature film before this he was still able to get good performances out of all of the actors in this film. With the best actor in this film bar none being Inde Navarrette as Nikki Freeman as she is just such a joy to watch in this film with her showing the struggle between the real Nikki and the one that's living out Bears wish all without saying a single word as all she needs to do is just give a look or twitch her eye and it's more then enough to let you know that there's a struggle going on inside of her and it is something that is really effective to watch in this film and heck she does have a big future ahead of her not just in horror films but in acting in general as she is so good in this film with her being able to go from really cute and likable to downright scary and creepy and back to cute again all in the same scene with this being something that really does shine through in her performance in this film. With the acting that's in this film really being helped by the fact that this films script is just so good that all this films actors have to do is just say the lines as they are written and a good performance will come out of them naturally which is something that really does help to raise the overall quality of the acting that's in this very film.
Whilst both the acting and the plot of the film are really good the same thing cannot be said for alot of the films characters. With the only two interesting characters in the whole film being Bear and Nikki with both Sarah and Ian just having nothing about them that makes them interesting characters and whilst this does make some sort of sense as it is Bear and Nikki that are the main characters of the film when half of your characters are just dull lifeless people then it does make you wonder why there was no thought and effort put into them as characters with all of the love going to the main couple of the film which again is something that does make sense as Bear and Nikki are the films main characters but there still needed to be something literally anything memorable about both Ian and Sarah as characters. Heck the only thing memorable about Sarah s her death and that's it as the character really added nothing to the film whereas with Ian there was still an attempt to make him a good character as we do see him try and help Bear out alot of the time but he is still a dull and lifeless character, compare this to Bear who we do get to find alot about like the fact that he has this huge crush on Nikki and has done for some time and the fact that he loves cats so much so that he does breakdown and cry when his cat Sandy dies at the start of the film this is a small thing yes but it is something that does make him all the more memorable as a character ad with Nikki whole we don't get to find out all that much about her before her body is taken over we do kind of find out that she has a father who is as fit as fiddle and while thats the only thing that we get to find out about her the film does have an in story reason for that that being the fact that she does spend alot of the film "possessed" whereas with both Ian and Sarah despite the fact that both of the main characters do spend alot of the film around them we find out nothing about them that makes them interesting as characters.
The best word that can be used to describe this film is creepy as that's exactly what it is in every single sense of the word. As the film never really stops building up tension even during the times where is a jump scare and there is that small moment of release there's always tension building up either in the foreground or in the background as we never really know just what this version of Nikki will do next with this being where this film does shine it's brightest as it makes the film feel like a throwback to the original Halloween which like this film was more of a slowburner and was always building up tension and it is something that does still as the whole point of a horror film is to scare people and that's exactly what this film does not just with its kills and gory scenes but with it's themes and ideas and the fact that the film does build up alot of tension is something that does hit that point home even further. With the best example of this being the scenes where Nikki does go from being cute and harmless to creepy and scary as we never really know just what it is that that she's going to say or do next not only to herself but also to other people and seeing become more and more slowly unhinged as the film progresses is something that does make those jump scares all the more scary as that could be the time when she finally does snap, bottom line being while yes this film does have alot of jump scares in it it uses them effectively and it uses them to move the film forward with them not being there just to have a random scare but rather they are there to show us just how more deranged that Nikki is becoming with again a good example of this being when she has a day off while Bear doesn't with her just standing by the front door waiting for him to return not moving all day which is such an effective scene as it does show us that this version of Nikki has taken a dive off of the deep end.
This film really does live up to it's tagline of be careful what you wish for as even tho Bear does end up with the girl of his dreams. The film does take great pride in showing us just how badly a wish no matter how well intended it is can very quickly turn sour which in this case does mean the version of Nikki that loves him isn't the one that he loves as this version of the character is not only really devoted to him but it gets to the point where she is willing to kill anything that shows him affection with this being something that films in general never really take the time to show us as they always treat the whole idea of getting what you want as a good thing but they never really take the time to show us just what it is that the characters are leaving behind. With that being something that would have helped those characters become who they are in the first place and this is something that does make this film find out as it not only takes the time to show us what does happen to Bear when he does finally get the girl but it also shows us that if your not word perfect in your wish as he only wished for Nikki to love him more then anything else which the toy itself has to take literally so she literally loves him more then anything else but if he was more careful with his words then while yes there is a good chance that she would still be possessed the chances of her killing anyone are all but gone but in saying this tho the whole idea of the film is to show us that sometimes just because you do get what you want it doesn't always mean that you'll like it as we see Bear very quickly fall out of love with this version of Nikki due to the fact that deep down he knows that it's not the same person, with him even spending a good portion of the films truly epic third act trying to either break or get the wish reversed with Ian even going as far as to not believe him and use the same toy to wish for $2 billion dollars which to his shock does come true thus condemning Bear to end Nikki's pain by killing himself the one thing that he didn't want to do.
As was mentioned at the very start of this review this film not only spent a few weeks at the top of the box office but as of this writing it is STILL within the top five films at the domestic box office. Just to be clear right now this film is currently out pacing films like Supergirl 2026 , The Mandalorian And Grogu and Jackass: Best And Last amongst other films when really any one of those films should have easily beaten this film at the box office and yet due to the fact that the makers of this film did put in alot more thought and effort then the makers of any of those film did it means that a film that should have long been gone from the box office is now still going strong and is still showing the big Hollywood Studios that you don't need alot of money to make it to the top of the box office as all you need is a good script , director and actors and that's all three of which ate things that this film has in spades. This is a film that Hollywood will make into a prestige horror film as nine times out of ten it will go up for alot of awards and it will win them and yet those same big Hollywood Studios won't learn from the mistakes that they are currently making as it is those same mistakes that are allowing the big budget films to be flops at the box office as Masters Of The Universe as good as that film is should have been a bigger hit at the box office and the same thing is true for Supergirl and The Mandalorian And Grogu they all should have been bigger hits at the box office and yet for one reason or another the studios that were making them did make mistakes be it releasing the film theatrically like with Masters Of The Universe or by having actors that did nothing to help the film when promoting it or just not being that good of a film in the first place these are all lessons that Hollywood does continually forget to learn and because of that the films that they want to be hits end up being flops and the films that they want to be flops end up being massive hits.
Now then this film has / had an exact grand total running time of exactly one hour and forty eight minuets and fifty three seconds. This was to be frank the perfect running time for this film to have as usually supernatural horror films don't have that long of a running time as they usually don't have alot to them which requires them to have a long running time and to some extent the same thing is true for this film however with this film being more of slowburner with the film really taking its time with its plot and in giving us alot of really tension filled scenes it really did need that amount of running time to do it's plot justice with the film having more then enough there interms of plot to really cover that amount of running time in the first place. However tho in saying this the film really doesn't use its running time all that wisely as the film really does take the time to fully develop its plot which is something that it really should have done given the fact that the film did have ore then enough running time in order to it and yet for one reason the makers of this film either forgot to add things to the plot that do make it feel more developed or just straight up didn't want to do with this being something that does make the plot of this film feel a bit on the thin side of things with it being clear as day that the makers of this film cared more about giving us alot of tension then they did a really well developed plot. The same thing is also true for the films characters as none of them get any kind of character development apart from maybe Bear who does learn not to use a toy that grants wished on people which even then that's not much in the way of character development as while there is some amount of thought and effort into making the characters of Bear and Nikki memorable there's no thought given to there character development as they do all end up in the exact same place at the end of the film then they were at the start of the film as none of them learn anything over the course of this film with it being made clear as day that the makers of this film put more effort into making Nikki and Bear memorable characters then they did into giving the characters some actual character development but I really will admit that this film really does have some really good pacing to it tho.
So now then as this is a horror film that really does mean that I have to actually talk about the actual horror that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual horror that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good. Whilst the film does rightfully get alot of praise for its jump scares and how it uses them that doesn't mean that the film isn't devoid of kills as while the film does technically only have three kills in the whole film they are all worth watching as they all show us just how insane that this film can get and to be fair to this film nearly all of them do work with one of them actually being important to the plot of the film. However that kill is not the best kill in the whole film as that honor does go to the death of Sarah as it is not only a really gory kill in it's own right it is also a kill that does come out of nowhere the kill itself won't be spoiled in this review as you really do need to go and see this film again to see the kill but it is a kill that does catch you off guard and while it does give that brief moment of release as now Nikki has finally killed someone the tension then right away just starts building right back up and it doesn't stop until the end credits start rolling, with the death of Sarah even being the goriest kill in the whole film heck the kill is just so good that it's all but guaranteed to get the golden chainsaw whenever they do a kill count on the film as the death is just that good and is just that fun and brutal to watch with the rest of the films kills being just as good as well in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
Overall if you haven't done already go and see this film and if you have done go and see it again as this film is worth seeing multiple times of the big screen as the film does have a fun lead villain that you actually want to know more about and a premise that is intriguing enough to make up for the fact that the plot is wafer thin at best and while the rest of the characters aren't that good that doesn't detract from the fact that this film is so good and is more then worth watching in my freaking opinions anyways / at least. Now then i've talked about all of the goo and as well aa all of the bad things that are in this very film in this very review and a such that really does mean that this very film really does earn itself a grand old score of exactly an 8 out of 10 from me.
Now then as for where I personally got all of the images that I personally used in this very review well then boys and girls and as well as ladies and gentlemen I personally got all of the images that I personally used in this very review from Tenor , IMP Awards . Com and Google Images. With my personally preferred website to use to get images from this film being Google Images simply because Google Images actually has images from this film really are up and on Google Images and plus pretty much much all of the images that I personally found on Google Images were all really very fairly high quality and as well as being as really very fairly high definition as well and so then horror fans we end this review as we always do with really our one and true goddess Elvira wishing us all some really very unpleasant dreams.
