These days in Hollywood it is common trend to just copy and paste what worked for another studio and not come up with anything new and creative. Well a film has just come out that has a somewhat original concept to it and yet it's barely making any money and that's the film that i'm going to be talking to you all about today as as much as sequels and prequels can be good without original films we wouldn't be able to get those sequels or prequels in the first place and so then join me as I review the film that sees Kristen from A Nightmare On Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors team up with Draco Malfoy and the girl from the second Austin Powers film to take on the girl from Deadpool 2 with the film in question being called simply just "They Will Kill You" enjoy.
The plot of this film is te years after running away and leaving her sister with there abusive father a girl must now fight an entire hotel full of rich and immortal people to save no only her sisters life but hers as well. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good. With this films plot being one that whilst it is yes simple and dumb that's also all that it really needed to be as you don't go into a film called They Will Kill You expecting the plot to be deep and thought provoking rather you go into expecting it to give you exactly what they title and trailers suggest at and that's really it. This is where the films plot does shine the most as it knows full well just what type of film that it is and isn't afraid to be anything other then a dumb action horror comedy film and whist yes it would have been nice if the film did have a more well thought out plot but to counteract that you don't go into a Fast & Furious movie expecting the plot to be well and thought you go into one of those movies expecting to see fast cars by driven fast and that's it and that's exactly what this film gives you. However to be fair tho if this films plot was more well thought out then it wouldn't have to keep on stopping on the film alot of the time in order to tell a pointless backstory that adds nothing to the plot of the film as none of what they set up in those segments plays no part of the films plot with the plot of this film also being really rather entertaining and as well as being really rather engaging as well in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
Starring in this film is Zazie Beetz as Asia Reaves and Bodies Bodies Bodies star Myha'la as Maria Reaves. Also starring in this film is Paterson Joseph as Ray Woodhouse , Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me star Heather Graham as Sharon Vanderbilt , Harry Potter franchise star Tom Felton as Kevin Sullivan , Angus Sampson as Asia's Private Investigator And Lawyer , James Remar as the voice of The Pig's Head and A Nightmare On Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors star Patricia Arquette as Lilith Woodhouse.
Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good. The fact that this films acting is as good as it is is still surprising on two accounts with the first being that whilst yes this films is made up of a bunch of really good actors there all mostly either unknown actors are very little known actors and therefor no one would have had a clue of what to expect from them in this film and the second one being that this films co-writer and Kirill Sokolov is a relative newcomer to the world therefor no one would have known if he can get a good performance out of his actors with this film being pretty much his first Hollywood film and to be fair he does manage to get some decent out of his actors that's not to say that all of them are good in this film as the likes of Angus Sampson and Paterson Joseph are fairly wooden in this film. However tho when he gets it right he really does get it right like for example with the best actor in this film which is Zazie Beetz as Asia Reaves as even tho she has proven that she can act in more weird and out there films like Joker which yes is a more weird film due to it's take on the character here there she really does get a chance to shine as this truly kicka*s and funny character with the acting that's in this film really being helped by the fact that this films script is just so good that all this films actors have to do is just say the lines as they are written and a good performance will come out of them naturally which is something that really does help to raise the overall quality of the acting that's in this very film.
Character wise this films characters aren't really all that much to write home about altho one could argue that that is the point. As all of the characters in this film do feel very note with them all not really having much in the way of a personality and while this would be seen as being a huge problem for any film in this film it is something that does work oddly well due to the fact that the makers of this film know full well that we are not going into this film expecting to see well thought out characters as we are instead going into the film expecting to see lots of fun action scenes , some jokes and lots of really cool kills and that's really it. With none of this films characters being all that original with even the twist with Patricia Arquette's character being one that you can see coming a mile with perhaps the only somewhat interesting character being Asia herself as she willingly goes to this hotel knowing full well what it's like in there just to get her little sister out of it but even that isn't enough to make up for the fact that there's nothing all that much to her character outside of the fact that she knows tons of ways to kill people in really creative and fun ways. Which is all good and all that but you still need the characters to be likable and this is where the film does fall a tad bit short as none of the characters even the ones that you are meant to like are likable characters as the film doesn't really give us a reason to care for them and heck one of the first things that we see Asia do in this film is run away from her sister knowing full well that she will get put back into the custody of their abusive father which while that does form apart of her characters arc in this film it also doesn't make her a likable character either.
I'm not quite as sure that anyone else picked up on this but to me this film did have a slight grindhouse feel to it. With this coming into play in the fact that the film does have alot of snap zooms in it which was something that you would see quite alot of the time in grindhouse style films and the fact that the film does have some small amounts of the frame breaking apart alot of the time and heck it could even be argued that the plot of the film is something that does feel like it came right out of a grindhouse film of course there always the chance that the makers of this film weren't inspired by those types of films but it's the fact that they went and added in all of those in the first place which does give the whole film a grindhouse type of feel to it. If this film was inspired by the grindhouse look and feel then it is something that does add to the film as well as it helps the film to have it's own visual look to it as it would have been very easy for the makers of this film to just copy the look and feel of every other horror film out there and call it day but it's the fact that they chose a very small sect of films that does make this film stand out all the more as not alot of people would know about grindhouse films in the first place which us something that would be fair enough and yet the makers of this film went and added things that you would only find in those old films however given the fact that this films writer and director are the same age there's more then a good chance that he just went with what he thought looked cool for the film and didn't really do things that were done in those types of films which is fair enough as things like the snap zooms do look really cool in this film with this being helped by the fact that they are not used all the time.
Whilst this film is a comedy action horror film the film itself doesn't shockingly spend alot of time on both the horror and comedy elements as rather it spends alot of time on being an action film. With both the comedy and horror feeling more like an afterthought to the film and yet it's when the film does focus on those aspects that we get to see it's full potential as all of the characters that are trying to kill Asia and her sister Maria do have some good banter between each other which nine times out of ten is really funny with that being because of the fact that the makers of this film do have an experienced comedy actor in the film as it's Heather Graham's character does get alot of the best jokes in the whole entire film be it due to something she says or due to the set up of the film and how it handles certain things allowing for her character to have alot of dark jokes. The film even has some really creative kills in it as well all of which do work really well as they show us the audience that the makers of this film did know how to come up with come crazy inventive kills alot of which we wouldn't have seen in other films before now yet due to the fact that the film doesn't focus alot of it's time on giving us likable characters in the first place the film deaths scenes just leave us feeling empty inside whereas if they did spend some time on making the characters that we are meant to hate truly unlikable people then it would make there deaths in this film be all the more satisfying and yet as they don't do that all we get left with is a bunch if cool looking gore effects that don't work as well as they should have done as we the audience just don't care for it's characters.
This is a film that does more then the just $8 million dollars that it's currently earned at the box office as this is such a fu film to watch. While this film will easily make back it's $20 million budget the fact that there are alot more films out with more established actors in them like for example Ready Or Not 2: Here I Come and Hoppers and the fact that Project Hail Mary is still cleaning up at the box office right now this film does need all the more help that it can get as while it's great that we do fight for original films to be made in the first place we also need to go out and support them when they do come out as that's the only way that we will get more original films like this. However given the fact that The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is coming out soon it's pretty obvious that this weekend this film is going to fall drastically from it's sixth place spot as all it has above it are these heavy hitter films and yet this small film that has no well known actor in it is still going to be fighting for it's life when this is the film that we should be going to support as like it or not The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is going to be making alot of money regardless of if we go and see it or not and the same thing goes for Project Hail Mary as well as they have a bunch of heavy hitter behind the camera as well as infront of it and yet this film doesn't have that but what it does have going for it is a unique set up that granted the film doesn't take as full advantage of as it really could have done but it also has alot of really cool action scenes that blend in really well with the films humor and horror. While yes it will always be good to go and see a sequel to a film that we know we loved and are therefore more then likely going to like again we should also go out there and support these original films just as much.
Now then this film has / had an exact grand total running time of exactly one hour and twenty eight minuets and forty eight seconds. With this being pretty much the exact grand total running time that you would expect a film lime this one to have in the first place and to the films credit it really does have more then plot there to cover that amount of running time in the first place and yet tho the film oddly feels like it could have had a few more minuets to it as when the film does start it never really stops as the film does move at such a breakneck pace when taking it's time and slowing things down for a few minuets would have gone miles in making this film be all the more better. The film doesn't even use it's running time all that wisely either as the film doesn't take the time to fully develop it's plot as the film oddly enough stops it's plot just as it truly gets going to have a pointless backstory scene when that it time that could have been spent on developing it's plot as nothing in the films backstory scenes play into the film barring something that gets mentioned in Maria's backstory scene and that's really it and heck even something that gets mentioned in Asia's backstory gets mentioned again in the film which makes that backstory seem all the more pointless with the film not even taking the time to fully develop it's characters due to the fact that the screen time that could have been used to develop it's characters is now being eaten up by pointless backstory scenes and yet in this film was just five or ten minuets longer then it would have been able to fully develop both it's plot and it's characters whilst also having those backstory scene in it but I really will admit that this film really does have some really good pacing to it tho.
So now then as this is an action film that really does mean that I have to actually talk about the actual action that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual action that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty so good. To say that the film has some really good and fun action in it would be a huge understatement as the whole film is built around having these really and creative action scenes with the twist involving the films villains being something that's really creative and it means that the characters get to do these more insane fights and it won't really matter in a few short minuets. With it being made clear as day that the makers of this film put alot more time and effort into the films action then they did both it's humor and scares as the film isn't as funny as it could have been and and it's not as scary as it should have been either and heck the film even teases us with a fight that would have been so cool to see and it doesn't deliver on that promise. With the best action scene n the whole entire film being when Asia has to take on several of the hotel occupants pretty much in the dark in what might be the hotels ballroom and it just gets so insane as she shoots them for the light with her only really getting the upper hand when she gets an axe and sets the top end of it on fire and starts swinging it around attacking every thing in sight with the mere visual of her having an axe on fire being nothing more then pure awsome with the rest of this films action being just as crazy and just as insane as well in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
Overall this film is one that should watched as while it does have alot of issues with the film those same issues are one that could also be found in any of the Fast & Furious films as much like those films this film knows that it's meant to be a dumb film and isn't afraid to be anything more then that in my freaking opinions anyways / at least. Now then i've talked about all of the good and as well as all of the bad things that are in this very film in this very review and as such that really does mean that this very film really does earn itself a grand old score of exactly a 6.5 out of 10 from me.
