Resident Evil 2002 Film Review

See horror fans I told you all had something special planned and I really meant it because i'm reviewing all of the live live action Resident Evil films. I wish that I could say that i'm watching them in order but since I didn't come up with the idea to do this until midway through watching the second movie so this is the only one that i'm not watching in order but from Extinction onwards they will all be done in order and so then horror fans here is my review of the 2002 film "Resident Evil" enjoy.

The plot of the film is something happens in a secret building called The Hive and it's up to small group of people to not only find out what happened but survive what originally happened. In terms of story it's actually alot better then the second movies since they do a good job of giving us something new and different which for the zombie genre at this point is something that we were begging for and it helps that the story was really told.

Of course starring in this film is franchise star and the only reason why people stuck around for the sequels Milla Jovovich as Alice. Also starring in this film is Fast & Furious franchise star Michelle Rodriguez as Rain Ocampo , Eric Mabius as Matthew "Matt" Addison , James Purefoy as Spence Parks , Martin Crewes as Chad Kaplan , Colin Salmon as James "One" Shade , Michaela Dicker as The Red Queen and Jason Isaacs as An Unnamed Doctor And The Narrator.

Anybody who goes to anyone of these films knows that the acting is going to be pretty bad and yeah it's true here. However tho to this film's credit this was the first film in the franchise and alot of the actors involved hadn't do any or much films before and so you can kind of forgive the acting for not being as good as it perhaps could have been but at the same time yeah the acting in this film is pretty freaking bad but I will say that Michelle Rodriguez seems to be one of the few actors actually trying to put in a solid performance in this film.

This film of course introduces us to main franchise protagonist Alice as played by the wife of the director . writer Milla Jovovich. What I find most interesting is seeing where the character began since if you only watch the sequels then you'll just know her as this character who does cool stuff and nothing more but if you watch this film then you'll see that she starts of as someone who's more human since alot of the time she's scared by what she sees and that is something that the character is very sorely missing in the latter films.

From little research there is I assume that this was first zombie film to be released in a few years but there's a chance that I could be wrong about that since 28 Days Later came out the exact same year. However if this is true then all of you Zombieland fans technically have this film to thank for bringing the zombie genre back the mainstream since without this film being a hit we wouldn't have any more zombie films which means no Zombieland films or The Waking Dead TV series.

Now unlike the second film which actually had pretty good pacing the same thing cannot be said for this film. Since there are times where the film feels like it's dragging on  and on with scenes lasting a whole lot longer then what is really needed which is a shame because when the film wants to have good pacing it really can have it but sadly the film like I said is bogged down by scenes that just go on and on and seemingly never stop.

What was fun at least for me was trying to work during the end scene is when does the ending take place in terms of the timeline. As far as I can work out the end of this film takes place during the 13 hours later scene in the second film but again there's a huge chance that I could be wrong about that and as far as I could tell the second film doesn't contradict anything that happens in the second film either which is something that I honestly wasn't expecting to be the case.

Now then boys and girls since at this point the franchise is still a horror film that means that we have to talk about the scares in the film. In my opinion the scares in the film are pretty decent I can honestly see why they reuse alot of  them in the recap in the sequels but there's just something about seeing these scares playing out the way in which they were originally intended and not in flashback form as the recap suggests.

Since there are some kills in the film I thought that i'd take some time to talk about the kills that are in the film. Which I honestly are your pretty standard zombie kills and nothing more which I understand why since like I said there hadn't been a zombie film produced in a while before this film came out but at the same time I would have liked it if a little more effort had been put into making the kills a little bit more creative.

Overall the franchise started out on solid foundations it's just a shame that the rest of the films in the franchise couldn't really follow up on it. Yes there are alot of issues with this film and i'm sure that I haven't even named all of the ones in this film but for me in this case the good out way the and and as such the film gets a 7 out of 10 from me and as always we end this review with our one true goddess Elvira wishing us all some very unpleasant dreams.

All images and gifs used in this review were gathered from either the Resident Evil fandom wiki page , Wikipedia or Google Images. I think you all know by now that I like to use a joke to really hit home how useful I think these websites are when it comes to high quality images and to to hopefully get you to use them but sadly I can;t think of any as such i'll just say if you don't want to see Freddy Krueger tonight then use either one of these sites.
